That was so poorly acted it hurts to watch. The content however, is naive; no country or nation is ever as good as he talks about. History makes heroes and great nations, and America isn't history yet. We have many highs and lows to speak of, but there's a long way to go in determining whether this country is hot or not. We do suck right now, but that bitter attitude isn't what's going to change our culture.
The point is that America isn't the greatest country in the world. It is in decline, and the world changes much faster today than it did in the past, so it's unlikely it will improve enough so that we can confidently claim to be the best country in the world. Yes, we can say we're a pretty darn awesome country, but we're a pretty darn awful country by many measures as well.
I'm not sure how a declination would necessarily indicate that America could no longer be the best country in the world, maybe you can explain? However, if we are willing to assume that is true, who might you say is number 1 now?

strongest military, greatest economy, most culturally influential, and greatest driver of innovation. all the while allowing a great deal of personal liberties. and no, i do not believe that we are "in decline", whatever the hell that means.
That's the most zealous, pompous, and unbecoming way an American can think. Congratulations.
for the record, i really don't like the the question to begin with. what makes a country "great" is entirely subjective. but if i had to give my inbiased opinion, i'll give it to you straight without any fluffy bullshit. we area the largest economy. we have the strongest military. we are the #1 exporter of culture (movies, music, etc..). and most major innovations in the past 100 years are of American origin.
and frankly, i don't give a shit about the average performance of American high school students compared to the rest of the world. we take it upon ourselves to educate everyone in this country. go to china or mexico, the underachievers are already working in the fields before the 7th grade. if those kids grew up in the States, they'd eventually major in ethnic studies at State University and occupy Wall Street when they couldn't pay back their loans.
Pretty cool that China and India have highly educated robot kids and a new juggernaut economy, but I'll take a mildly retarded athlete American kid ten times out of ten. Next question. Pretty sure advanced math problems and pokemon aren't what sent the pilgrims across the ocean to have lunch and kick it with the Indians. Read a fucking history book bro. It's about being proud, confident, and devoid of any giveable fucks. Three things America has always had since John Elway founded our country in 1492 or something. Oh, you're kids are educated enough to perform brain surgery at age 14? Cool story hansel, my kid Tripp here will give your kid a wedgie after he gets a C in basic math. America. I didnt watch the video, I just inferred the subject matter.
It sounds like the basis of your post is that Americans are somehow physically superior than persons of foreign countries. Maybe you've neglected to note our ridiculous obesity rates.
The fact is, whether on the topic of education, physical composition, or technological advance, we're living on borrowed time. America is an outstanding nation built in the 19th and 20th century. Every passing generation tends to underperform the last. Test scores are down, EM are catching up with us in technology and innovation, and all the military strength we have is becoming continually more useless as the world becomes a safer place. Eventually, America will have to come off of the post-WWII economic and political fortune it found itself possessing, and begin acting like a responsible nation that plays by the rules. Other powers will emerge to share the role.
See, when you spend a nearly a trill' on defense ever year you write the rules, not follow them.
Do we really need another one of these threads? Honestly, America isn't in a decline, everyone is. Even IF America is in a decline, who fucking cares. Just because the Titanic sunk doesn't mean everyone died.
China has all kinds of issues, ranging from oversupply to horrible pollution. Not to mention that they have the vast majority of people living on a couple bucks a day. The poorest American/European is a king compared to even middle class Chinese.
India is corrupt as fuck and has large numbers of people starving to death. They cut milk with oil for godfsake.
Europe is a mess. All the other countries growing are simply trying to achieve basic middle class life like there is in America.
The US is the reserve currency of the world and that isn't going to change anytime soon. It is the sole military power and until China steps up and starts getting involved in global conflict it will remain that way. We can inflate our debt away or simply cut the nearly trillion in defense spending and be fine.
Oh, not to mention that we are the food producer of the world, with one of the largest land masses of any nation and jack squat population. Protected by two oceans and two weak nations. We educate the world, feed the world, militarily protect or influence the world.
So yeah, complete and total decline. Another great post centered around hyperbole.
And worst case scenario, we decline and become the UK. But even better since we have massive amounts of natural resources, which are even more of a benefit in a world with a growing population that is craving more food and more stuff.
And before people start with the pissing match, I am not cheering for the US. It is just how shit is right now. Plenty of other great nations, no need for dick measuring. China and India have tons of problems and maybe in 50-100 years things will be different. Right now it isn't the case.
And honestly, being "the best" doesn't really mean shit to most people. Get educated, accumulate wealth and do whatever you want. Patriotism is simply used to keep the proletariat in line.
Was going to add to the debate, but TNA pretty much covered it all.
America has its share of problems, but so does every nation on Earth.
Also, I gave the Newsroom a shot, and honestly 75% of it is just awful. The dialogue, especially amongst the secondary characters, is cringe-worthy garbage. It's just basically an hour of Sorkin at his worst.
As an American living in Europe, there's one compliment I receive regularly (among the onslaught of negativity) about the US. Note to monkeys, calling 'America' the States or the US is much better than saying 'America' when you are in Europe.
The US was founded based on the core values of freedom and liberty. The founding fathers regularly argued in heated debates, and carefully thought through, what it would take to defend and preserve this freedom. They separated church from state. They established rules and policies that would foster equity and the pursuit of happiness.
Sadly, many Americans take this to mean they are entitled to a good life and to look down on other countries. This is why we are largely fat, lazy, arrogant people. Success lulls you into a false sense of security and superiority. But continued success means knowing you are never totally safe.
I think we're waking up to that finally, that we are the first generation since the depression who will face bleaker prospects than the generation before us. However I think it is a good thing and it's lit a fire under many asses to get out and start a business, and work hard.
