Most Overrated Beach Destinations

for those who dare to venture beyond their cushy ACK/MVY/sag harbor/mykonos pads - what are the most overrated beaches you've come across globally?

I'll start -

Most Overrated:

  • St. Lucia / Antigua & Barbuda / St. Kitts – usually cruise ship destinations. you can fly in from miami but these were some of the shittest & underdeveloped airports i've been. the only reason there aren't terrorism activities here is b/c they don't got any population. minimum downtown area + very basic infrastructure + mosquitoes = not much to do except for lying on the beach which are frankly not that great (coarse sand, i'm very picky about the sand quality). limited wifi coverage as well. rent 4x4s to explore the hilly side but frankly they all look the same. for dual island countries (antigua + barbuda or st. kitts + nevis) you can take a wally (water taxi) but i was seasick for that stuff so never again.

  • Bali – no sidewalks & way too much noise & MONKEYS who steal your stuff.

idk about all the hype around SE Asia in general. sure it's popular for backpackers & gap year kiddos b/c everything is so much cheaper than say copenhagen or brussels but if you're planning for a serious vacation i'd save the hassle. there's nothing charming about poverty or unkempt roads or dirty sidewalks, period. some might say they go there for the culture - ubud was supposed to be this cultural & artistic hub in bali but i came away very unimpressed in terms of you wouldn't buy those art if you're in the States (and if you do i srsly judge your taste). might get flak for this but SE Asia except for singapore is such a bumblefuck & i was allergic to the smog even when we're staying almost right by the sea. i had to be on the beach all day b/c if we go a little bit inland my respiratory system would start attacking me.

  • Phuket, Thailand – wild dogs on the tourist beach who WILL come grind on u. nuff said.

  • Nha Trang, Vietnam – 1st rate view, 3rd rate beach. VERY popular with russian tourists (former russia / USSR naval base) but if you're looking for serious eye candy fly back to myk asap. plastic litter on the beach & the city was pretty dirty. questionable music choices at the beachside restaurants. VERY LOUD at night. for all the hotels you need to cross a road with super heavy motorcycle/car traffic and there's no traffic lights or crosswalks & the traffic won't stop for you. imagine crossing a low-speed highway.

  • Nice, France – we went in the height of the summer so of course the beach was swarming w/ peeps, this was bad timing on our part. je ne parle francais = communication problems with waiters/drivers/etc. my mom broke her knee here (tripped b/c the road wasn't well paved) and none of the medical staff at the hospital we went to spoke english so we had to use google translate & pay some pretty steep fees. the architecture with the monochromatic square houses wasn't as impressive as vienna or budapest (but frankly tho few are).

NOT overrated:

  • Barbados – best clean white silky sand & the food was great & the beach was not too crowded (we went during the high season in december / january and i never felt claustrophobic). hotel chains usually have their own private beach which are well-maintained. if we're talking about the beach alone, i'd say this is the best one.

  • Jejudo, South Korea – this one was a surprise find. we heard it's the hawaii of south korea and for the same latitude as charleston SC the vegetation was very tropical. very clean. very quiet. don't expect a well-developed beach strip like waikiki – there are usually only a few restaurants / convenient stores lining the beach. most of the eateries are mom-n-pop shops and only have 6-10 dishes at a time but they were all delicious. we seemed to be the only foreign tourists around. this place felt like it's still relatively untouched by tourism, so go visit before it becomes the next bali.

  • Honolulu – i still think this is the most well-developed beach destination all around. a bit commercialized yes but the atmosphere really makes you feel like you're on vacation. i grew up in big cities so i'm never super comfortable in remote small towns or places where there aren't tall buildings or a developed commercial area. this is the best of both worlds, urban and relaxing. plus everyone speaks english so no language barrier + no waiting in line at border control on your return flight. MAGA.
