Music player

I recently lost my IPod, which was very dear to me and had served me steadfastly through the transition from college to banking. Its ultimate fate was wholly undeserving; fell out of my coat pocket in a cab after managing to remain by my side through years and years of more dangerous adventures.

Anyway, I was going to buy another IPod without even thinking. However, out of curiousity, does anyone have a different music player to recommend and what would the pros and cons be? Also, I have a feeling that I'll be caving in and buying an IPhone in the near future - so do I even need a music player at that point?

I use my iPhone almost exclusively - having an iPod in my phone that syncs with iTunes is probably my favorite feature in the entire phone. When I need to exercise, I have a little $50 iPod nano that I load up with a running playlist so I don't need to run with my phone. If you're an Apple fan, just hold out for your new iPhone and use that.

My iPod has started playing out of only on ear, so I may also be in the market soon. From what I can tell, outside of a phone that can serve dual purposes (Droid, iPhone, etc.) the iPod is still the way to go. There are always advantages to having such a popular product (finding accesories, software, etc.). I remember when I got mine, my brother got something else that was "Sooo much better" that no one had ever heard of, then or now. I stuck with the iPod, which turned out to be a great decision. I think he just wanted it because it wasn't mainstream- he's always been a bit of a hipster...
