Nike adds Plus Size Mannequins

Article link below:

I think this is a smart move from Nike, allows them to access a new market of customers. However, I think they could have made a separate line for the "plus-size" category (but maybe ppl wouldn't buy it if its different).

"More than half of adult American women (67%) wear a size 14 or larger, according to research firm Plunkett Research."

That says it all.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

I feel it has less to do with eating than with drinking. People drink a lot of calories, soda, juice, dressed up coffees, alcohol

"Pan European Monkey" Can’t wait for our society to go back to fat shaming and push for healthier people - and btw if we do go Long NYSE:WW

No need for that. Nature will fat shame the fuck out of fat people and there's nothing the woke crowd can do about it.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

They can implement national healthcare and then have it all get more expensive due to the higher healthcare costs incurred by overweight people

I think that's the wrong way of looking at it.

From Nike's perspective and as a business model, a lot of people are overweight / plus sized. These people need quality, well functioning, comfortable clothes. Nike is filling this market need, just like how tailors make custom suits for overweight / tall / overtly skinny customers.

So I don't know if I view this as fat acceptance (and again, I haven't really read into it so if that's how Nike is marketing it, then yeah, I don't agree with them) or as just a way to look like an accepting company while capturing market share.

I wasn't directly fat shamed (at least to my face) but life does get more difficult / less forgiving if you're overweight (you're naturally treated differently / excluded from things / etc) and I was able to get in shape as a result of coming to terms with that concept.

I think companies have a PR liability to appear fat accepting regardless if they are or not. But of course any profitable company will ride the latest HAES/FA/body positivity trend if it makes them money. It really doesn't matter what they really think.

People keep on praising fashion companies for using plus sized models and running body positivity campaigns (looking at you American Eagle/aerie), but you bet someone sitting in management is laughing at everyone buying into the hype hook line and sinker and throwing money at them.

Yeah. Good business decision.

Of course, it sucks that being obese is becoming normalized. Or rather, I know that is "normal" for Americans, now, but it sucks that we are beginning to accept that that is okay. I have to agree that normal mannequins are probably too thin, to the point they represent an unhealthy body type as much as a 500 lbs mannequin does.

Fuck fat mannequins. Idiotic of Nike, and it shatters their "athletic" image. IMO a push for plus sizing directly promotes obesity and heart disease

I'm all for it actually. I don't think it's just going to keep women being okay being overweight, most women hate the fact that they are and are too ashamed to even start. That's why we see the new "body positive" wave. It's a coping mechanism. I think this will help those women to start working out again, and as a result, we'll see more women getting fit again. That's good for us

Agreed...but I think there is a far divide from "Im trying to get back in shape to make myself better, but I'm not trying to broadcast it" and "Im trying to get back into shape, but in the mean time here's essentially a bikini I wear to the gym"
