Nook or Kindle
Need some advice on e-readers. I watched the consumer reports youtube clip on both which didnt really tell me shit so i was hoping someone who has spent some time shopping around, or owns one or the other could offer some pros and cons.
Kindle. You can access your library on your iDevice or Droid if you download the app. Pretty nifty. They also have software for Macs and PCs
Also, the kindle is just for reading making it distraction-free whereas the nook could be turned into an android tablet
kindle. I'm loving it
I do not have the nook but I can honestly say that I love my Kindle. It is a perfect reading device.
It is like holding a very thin lightweight book. The screen looks like printed ink and I bring it with me everywhere. Fits right in my suit coat and I read on the subway.
The nook or kobo. Kindle is too proprietary for my tastes. Kobo and Nook are essentially open source. You can put any book on them
KIndle. The nook in its newer versions is becoming more like an iPad in terms of screen. If you want to read a lot without your eyes hurting, then the Kindle screen is the best.
I bought my kindle in October and have read tons of books since then. You can read for 3+ hours and your eyes do not get destroyed.
Kindle
Kindle. No contest.
You shouldn't be thinking Nook vs. Kindle, you should be thinking Kindle vs. Tablet (iPad). For a dedicated e-reader, Kindle is the gold standard. Nook is merely a knock-off, and a more expensive one at that. If you need more functionality than just reading, consider a tablet (but be prepared for non-stop distraction).
wait for the new kindle coming out soonish
I got a kindle recently and I love it. Check out http://www.instapaper.com
Instapaper lets you save any article you don't have time to read and will send you batches of them in either 1, 3, or 5 day intervals (or immediately if you want) directly to your kindle. Lets me catch up on long articles on bloomberg/hbs/etc on the subway/train home from the city everyday. Costs $0.15 per meg to send it over 3G, or free over WiFi.
This might be a dumb question but can you transfer pdf's to a Kindle? I have a bunch of eBooks in pdf that I would like to be able to read away from my laptop.
From what I have been told another benefit of the Kindle is that you can access your friend's libraries if they give you their log-in info (from your own device).
Yes you can, if you do it right amazon will even convert it to a kindle format. Its free over wireless and costs a little if you do it over 3G
Kindle. I have one and love it.
@duffmt6 yes you can view .PDFs just connect your kindle and xfer or email them to your kindle address (they charge you a few bucks for that one though).
They should come out with a color kindle...make those little on off switches smaller so can fit three RGB in the current size of one black/white one
I don't have any e-reader, there's just something about a real book. I've tried reading on the Kindle, and well...it's just not for me. Maybe I'll get one one day to read uber long pdf's, but for that I'd rather get an ipad and be able to do other stuff. I know the Nook is technically better bang for buck, but ppl seem to keep buying Kindles...
HPM and Eddie are fanboys. Kindle is some proprietary shit. Nook and Kobo have longer batteries and more fleixibility. Nook and KOBO have touch screen varients. Dude, get the Nook or the Kobo.
I'm a Fanboy for a reason. The Kindle is a fantastic reading experience. I just replaced my Gen-1 Kindle a few months ago with a new one, and the battery life is sick so I'm not sure what you're talking about there.
You make a point that the technology is proprietary and you're correct. But I'm comfortable owning proprietary technology from the world leader in the book selling space. Unlike Apple fanboys who evangelize for a company with 5% market share on their best day, Amazon owns the global market for books.
Good luck selling your Nook on eBay when Barnes & Noble goes tits-up.
Haha my thoughts exactly. Ala borders books.
definitely kindle for a pure reading device- anything backlit strains your eyes, and if its a glass screen (that means you, ipad and nook), the glare from the sun makes it impossible to read. I have an ipad and kindle, and tablets are good for their own specific function (what that is, I havent actually figured out). plus the kindle policy is amazing- no matter what you do to it, while its under warranty, they 2nd-day deliver you a new one for free.
I don't won either yet, but I'm wondering if there is any advertising popups or the equivalent on these? Just like youtube didn't have ads at first, now you have to wait fifteen seconds to view some clips.....is this the case with ebooks? If so, are there downloadable hacks around the adware?
Amazon only just recently (read: last 3 or 4 months) began offering a Kindle with ads. These ad-enabled Kindles sell at a ~25% discount to standard Kindles and lowered the price of a wifi Kindle to $114. As far as I know, the only advertising is in the form of special offers when you buy the Kindle and then sponsored screen savers (as in: not disruptive, pop-up, sidebar, etc... the ads only display when the unit is on and inactive), so it's not obnoxious. The ad-enabled 3G Kindle can now be had for $139 - a far cry from the $400 I paid for my first Kindle 3+ years ago.
I have a Kindle 3G. I also have an Android phone. I use my Kindle as a backup internet device when my battery's out.
-You can send PDFs (bootleg ones even) and .doc's to [email protected] when you engage Wifi. -Kindle screen is easy, comfortable reading. -Kindle has a browser and a mp3 player (I put case studies in the mp3 player). -It's about 6 ounces I think. I don't use a case. I tie the Kindle with my paper notebook.
-You can root the Kindle, have your own wallpapers etc. The point in getting a kindle is to have a device that only lets you read.
Do you not have the typical Adobe reader tools (i.e. zoom features) on the Kindle? I'm thinking of text book type books, so this might be an issue.
Good input. Thanks.
@duffmt6 The Kindle scales font up and down as large or small as you want it, but if you plan to use it for a lot of textbook reading you should really buy the Kindle DX which was specifically designed for textbooks.
My buddy's wife is in med school (you can imagine the textbooks she deals with) and she swears by her Kindle DX.
Thanks, I'll definitely look into that.
can you add notes to kindle? i write notes in txt books :/
You can add notes in the kindle.
nice are they like real notes where i can draw shapes etc or are they typed only notes?
typed notes. it's not touch screen.
Kindle for e-reader. Nook Color if you want a pseudo tablet experience.
I have a rooted Nook Color running CM7 and it's bad ass. Note: I don't read many books, so I'm ok with the back-lit screen of the NC.
Regards
Kindle.
Also there is a tool called calibre (think iTunes for the kindle) that lets you get periodicals like the economist for free.
I have an Ipad and it somewhat solves the debate. You have have the nook, kindle, and iBooks; therefore, you have the best of each world. On the downside, the glare is pretty abysmal when outside and it presents a lot of room for distractions.
Kindle without a doubt. However it isn't a catch-all. Some books are the same price as the paper equivilent on amazon. However the screen is fantastic for reading and if you read alot of classic books they're free!
But a kindle is just for that, reading books. If you wanna play games or download the ft an ipad would be a better bet, however without eink technology reading an entire book on it would be abit of a nightmare!
I have an iPad that I mostly use to read shit on right now. I have quite a few PDFs that are scanned copies of books and many of them are not text searchable (OCRing them would make the file size gigantic). Can any of the readers mentioned in this thread load them and if so, how would they appear? They appear great on my iPad but I would also totally appreciate a smaller and easier to read from device also.
I have an Ipad, a droid and a Kindle. I've just my mother's Nook. Kindle is by far the best reader for books. Ipad is better for subscriptions to newspapers and journals. I read Kindle on my droid when I'm waiting in a dr's office or other place I don't want to carry a around.
