June 13th start day, getting to HK on the 11th..

Anyone else?

I don't accept sacrifices and I don't make them. ... If ever the pleasure of one has to be bought by the pain of the other, there better be no trade at all. A trade by which one gains and the other loses is a fraud.

Have you guys picked your groups/desks with your firm yet? Any idea how the placement process goes and how they determine what groups you might be a fit for?

Hey all, I'm an associate at a NY PE firm going to HKUST for my MBA in August. I used to live in HK and can't wait to plug back into the city.

I'm interning for GS and we haven't started that process yet, although I'm pretty sure I'll be on FX desks. That was my indicated interest throughout the process and the people who wanted to see me there were really all concentrated in FX so...

I think BarCap is in the same building! Any idea where DB is?

maybe nicklas could guide us around LKF haha, I've heard it's a great party scene down there..

Cool! DB's office is located in kowloon so a little further off from you guys. Are you looking to do sales or trading? I'm also quite interested in FX as well looking to get into trading but I'm quite worried that it's the "hot desk" for interns to pick.

Do you guys know where your housing will be yet? Also just out of curiosity was your housing comp'd by the firm in your contracts? (mine was not, though it is subsidized)

Haven't picked my desks yet, HR said that information about selection will be made available 'in due course' so I'm not sure exactly when that'll happen. Housing is paid for, although I still have no idea the details of where I'll be living, if it's a single, etc. Last year I lived in a tiny serviced apartment in Central, I'm assuming BarCap will provide something similar (like a crappy dorm room that gets cleaned once a week). Also, I can confirm: LKF does have a great party scene haha..

I also believe "wan chai" is where all the prostitutes are. Also in Macau (about 40 minute ferry). And we're talking models.

So regarding housing I've heard they're putting us in a hotel (rumor...) as that's what J.P. Morgan is providing. However we won't be getting that info until 2 weeks before, so we'll see...

As far as sales or trading goes, I've been really against doing sales just because it's a stereotype that it's the only role for girls in S&T, but I realize certain sales roles could be more quantitative than certain trading roles, so I'm thinking FX Sales and FX trading as the 2 rotations... pretty sure I can get on both, but if not I'm open to other options. Also have a great interest in commodities, but the desks are located in Singapore.

Let's hope LKF won't be too much of a distraction....

And when does school end for everyone, and what are yall doing with the time in between?? Anyone gonna be in mainland?

I finish early may but my internship doesn't start till end of june so I have a good 1.5 months off in between. I am considering just going to HK early to try to get a better feel for the place, but I don't know how that works out regarding Visa/housing, etc issues. Seems like you guys all know quite abit about HK/Asia, am I the only ABC who will be there? I don't speak any mandarin and only basic cantonese, though I've heard and I'm hoping that thats not going to be a big issue as far as social life...

By the way, what school is everyone from? NYU here...anyone else from nyc?

Hey diddykong89, I can explain the Visa/housing situation. Firstly, you should check the length of the Visa your firm is helping you get and compare it to the length of your internship (call HR, or the Visa intermediary). For instance, I'll be getting a 12-week Visa, and my internship lasts for 10 weeks. That means I have a combined total of 2 weeks at the very maximum for a margin on either end (so I could arrive 14 days early, or arrive 7 days early and leave 7 days late, etc).

However, say your work Visa is either exactly the length of your internship, or not as long as you would like (example: you want to chill in HK for a month before your 10 week internship, but only will be getting a 10 week Visa). What you can do is simply arrive in HK whenever you want, but when you land, go in on a tourist Visa (tell them you are not activating your work Visa yet when you go through customs). Use the 'visitors' line, and make sure they don't stamp your work Visa at this point.

Now, before you start work you must be on your work Visa. In order to activate that, you must leave HK first... but this is not so awkward. Simply take a 40 minute or so ferry to Macau (which you should check out anyways), and then when you take the ferry back to HK, you will have to enter through customs, at which point you can activate your Visa. Then you can legally begin the internship.

As for housing- I believe that your firm will only provide an apartment/hotel room from the period one day before your work starts until one day after it ends. If you would like to spend more time in HK earlier in the summer, you will need to make your own hotel arrangements. You should check with HR to make sure that's the case.

Anyways, hope that clears things up... and I hope I'm not wrong on anything. I had a similar, but not identical situation last summer, where I went to Macau and re-entered to activate a work Visa.

Aside from all that, I can confirm that you'll be 100% fine in HK with just English haha, so don't worry. My Chinese was pretty crappy last summer but I had a blast. HK is awesome!

I think he's referring to how soon he'll be getting the Visa and such...

I've been to HK twice, 2 days on both visits (to take the SAT). Most people presume I'm ABC b/c I don't have an accent, but I grew up in Nanjing/Shanghai except for a couple years when I lived in Seattle... No Cantonese unfortunately, native in Mandarin though.. I think you'll survive haha.

Thanks for the tip nicklas, unfortunately I won't be benefiting from that at all........... Would love to take trips to Macau for the gambling scene though, yeah yeah??

I'm currently in Beijing and I'll head to HK next week to fly home. I've got a boutique internship in NY before I start my MBA at Chinese University in August.

diddykong - I'm a CBC and don't speak Mandarin/Cantonese so we're in the same boat.

LKF is a great place to meet ex-pats. I've been exploring TST & some other areas for local bars/clubs.

Macau is fun but don't go if you have any deadlines as it isn't very reliable and could cause you to stay quite late (I speak from my buddy's experience).
