Promotion from Analyst to Associate - how does it happen?

Hi everyone -

Need some guidance from this group -

For background context, I am an analyst at a BB working in Equity Trading and I am coming up to my second year (in about a month or so.) I was wondering, what is the average period from analyst to associate. I have mentioned to my manager that I would like to pursue and position myself for the analyst-to-associate promotion. And my manager did mention that a good candidate for it (Overall feedback from the team and manager has been positive).

But I've heard its about 2 to 3 years. But want to hear your experience. What happens? Does your manager pull you for a meeting and discuss? What is discuss in the meeting? What does comp look like? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated it.

If there is a meeting of some sort, what would be your advice in terms of navigating it?

thanks!

Some firms are designed to have an analyst program that’s set between 2 to 3 years. You would get promoted automatically if performance is fine.

if yours is different, i suggest speaking to your manager a month or two prior to official yr end performance review time (promotions are typically discussed amongst MDs prior to formal yr end review). Indicate your interest and what you can do better to position yourself for a promotion. Title aside, are you ready to become an associate? You should feel like you’re already doing associate level tasks before you ask to get promoted to associate.

Comps can be different but this forum has a salary database so check there. At minimum, you should be 100k+ base

Appreciate the response! Regarding this; "You should feel like you're already doing associate level tasks before you ask to get promoted to associate."

Everyone in my team is a VP, D, or MD. I am the only junior person in the team - so its a bit hard for me to tell what is considered associate level tasks is in my team. It is more of - "what do you need, I'll figure it out some how".

"noobies123" "what do you need, I'll figure it out some how".

How do you end up solving it or figuring it out? I along with most analyst I believe struggle with just finding some way to do it. I just don't think I have the right guidance to "just figure it out"

Will update my computer soon and leave Incognito so I will disappear forever. How did I achieve Neanderthal by trolling? Some people are after me so need to close account for safety.
