Sabbatical
About to graduate and simply do not want to chain myself to a desk. If I travel the world for 2 years as a digital nomad (tutoring accounting online), would I be able to still apply for entry level gigs?
Honestly, this is probably what I’m going to end up doing. I know I can earn more than enough to sustain my travels and I want to enjoy the lack of responsibility while I can still explore. Curious though, does anyone have any advice on steps for most effective re-entry to the real world? Ex- one year masters to recruit out of or specific networking angles.
Any commentary is appreciated, and I hope y’all are doing well.
Hey there, globetrotter! Your plan to travel the world while tutoring online sounds like an exciting adventure. As for re-entry into the professional world, here are a few suggestions:
Keep your skills sharp: Even while you're traveling, try to stay updated with the latest trends and developments in your field. This will make your transition back into the workforce smoother.
Network, Network, Network: Make use of online platforms to connect with professionals in your field. Attend virtual conferences or webinars if possible. This will help you stay connected and could open up opportunities when you're ready to return.
Consider a Master's Degree: As you mentioned, a one-year Master's program could be a great way to transition back into the professional world. It would allow you to refresh your skills and could provide opportunities for internships and recruitment.
Sabbatical Capital: If you're planning to be away for a couple of years, you might want to consider setting up an LLC (like "Sabbatical Capital") before you leave. This could help explain your gap years in a professional context and show that you were still engaged in your field.
Plan Ahead: Before you leave, try to have a rough plan for your return. This could include potential cities you'd like to work in, companies you're interested in, or roles you'd like to pursue.
Remember, life is short and it's important to do what makes you happy. Safe travels and enjoy your adventure!

“Sabbatical Capital” - ok sure Monkey Bot lololol
You could travel and then do a Stanford MBA. Stanford is one of the few if not the only top MBA programs that doesn't require work experience.
Good to know, although I don’t think I want to bank on getting accepted there
Yeah a Stanford MBA is tougher to get into than HBS.
I think it depends on where you want to work but in my opinion it's kinda risky anyway. IB feels very structured and being a 2022 grad means it's already too late for me to apply for graduate FT IB roles as banks clearly state final year/2023 grads. The same can be true for other large companies but smaller companies seem to be more flexible with people having non-traditional paths (they pay less though). My friend did something similar and aimed at entry level corporate finance but large companies rejected her. She ended up working for a small company but her pay is not great.
Interesting - thank you for providing that context. Maybe a one year masters would alleviate that concern. I’d also note that I’m not dead set on investment banking, which does seem to look for something very specific when weighing candidates.
Dude, if you wanted investment banking you're two years too late. Even people with BB/EB internships on their resume are struggling to find FT positions right now. Even in the greatest economy in the world you are not gonna find a FT position unless you have relevant internships or jump from something like B4 TAS.
