Should I wear a button up shirt for hirevues or just dress clean?

White long sleeve shirt maybe a crew neck. Would this fit be too far out into the “wtf is he wearing for the interview” category? Id like to just dress and feel comfortable in answering my questions if I’m gonna do a hirevue that’s from my bedroom (I have a small room you can literally see the bed behind me). Because the more you think about it the more out of place I would be compared to my background which would subconsciously give off a negative view towards the final choice of pass or fail. Am I just overthinking?

As someone who has done the incredibly boring task of reviewing Hirevues, 99.9% of people are in a suit and tie. You will stand out very negatively in just a dress shirt. Absolutely no to a crew neck or regular shirt. Immediate ding.

I would recommend booking a room at your school's library and doing it there, but if you can't do that, no one cares about your bed in the back... they know you live in a dorm. But really you need to be in a suit and tie regardless of where you do it from.

Big no is reading from the screen, or even having anything up. You can see the eyes moving/tracking.

Nervousness is fine and normal. Even years into the job I would be very nervous doing one of these. I'd keep your hands on your lap. Much more important is what you actually say - show that you've researched IB and understand what it is, have decent "tell me about a time when" answers. A lot of people give answers that are hard to follow, so practice these and use the STAR format.

I also think the best way to practice is on camera. Facetime your buddies, but make yourself full screen, and make them ask you the Hirevue questions. The camera is the worst part of these

Would I get dinged if I didn’t have access to a tie and suit? I only had a dress shirt and wore that with a quarter zip over it because it was extremely cold

Yes, because everyone has access to a tie and suit, especially over a zoom meeting where the suit doesn't even need to be fitted. You can buy a cheap tie and suit for like $100.

Interviews, weddings, and funerals are like the three times in 2024 where you actually have to dress up.

Even though the corporate environment is very casual these days, for interviews, you dress in business attire, meaning, shirt, tie and jacket.  The risk of being too formal is close to 0 but the risk of being too casual could be substantial.  I can't think of a good reason to take a chance.

I over dressed for a CFO interview with a tech company in Silicon Alley and got dinged for it. The second I walked into the office I knew I over dressed and the CEO started bashing me about it immediately, but he never told me the interview was casual. I should have worn my skinnny jeans and Vans with the yellow laces.

A tech company could have different norms but most people here are not interviewing at tech companies.  With that said, it still does not make much sense to get dinged for dressing up.

Ofc, cuz it's Silicon Alley. Pretty sus there.

Jokes aside, this is crazy. A CFO anywhere is expected to be formal, let alone the fact that it's an interview. We're not dressing to reflect what we'd wear to work every day, but dressing out of respect for the occasion
