tech moves everything around me...
How do you guys get up-to-speed on new technologies and tech trends?
I find myself often in a position to need to learn about new industries, so I'm keen to see how you guys do it.
For example, I currently need to get up to speed on AI and machine learning, but I don't really have time to wade through tens of hours of basic datascience classes on Coursera.
Youtube videos are unreliable - as most of these are just high-level intros.
I have tried to find equity research primers - and those can help.
But this requires the kindness of buddies in equity research or generosity of sales-traders.
Anyone got any ideas? How do you do research on new industries / get up to speed on new technologies?
network with people actually doing the work. if they're any good, they'll be able to explain it in layman's terms
also, you could thread hop. go to wikipedia, read about the topic, then read the source papers from the citations, which will lead to more citations, etc.
Agree with above plus whitepapers. Stanford GSB has a great white paper on this, Google has this one, and this entire website here is pretty much a gold mine. Good luck! I'm learning about the space myself.
Didn't read anything but when I saw "Tech moves everything around me" I immediately thought of the wu tang clan. Was that intentional?
Absolutely. Cream, get the money, dolla' dolla' bill.
no fucking shit son?

This is a fruitless endeavor. You'll never outcompete the competition. You'll struggle to keep your head above water. Compete where you have asymmetrical advantages and/or little competition with disproportionate reward. I go to lengths to avoid the news and current events. If you rely on this to make a living, I can't imagine you wouldn't have constant anxiety. That's gonna kill you. And then tech won't matter.
CREAM GET THE MONEY
As has been mentioned already. visit wikipedia. DO NOT go by the edit-able text that makes up the bulk of the entry, go straight to the bottom of the page to visit the cited sources and non-wiki pages.
Look for white papers at SSRN and other sites. Gizmodo has helped me countless times to get smart quick and grasp some of the most common vocabulary in a new sector/new technology.
Citibank has awesome free research on technology and disruptors in various sectors ala "car of the future" "tech at work". Do a Google search for "citi gps"
