Texas Secession
A lot of you have probably already seen this but for those who havent; Some guy's petition to the White House to grant Texas secession from the United States has gotten 30,000+ signatures, more than the threshold to draw a White House Reaction.

I think, while obviously it won't occur, it is an interesting idea. I would love to hear what people think about a Texas secession. What (other than our enormous military) does Texas need the US for? They are surely in much better shape in terms of public finance and economic growth.

Secession is treason. Plain and simple. Why can't southerners learn their lesson?
I think that the enormous military bit describes it perfectly. Otherwise you'll have MS13, La Familia and Los Zetas competing for oil rights as they peddle their massive hoards of coke to our pretty girls in Arkansas and the humble folk in Oklahoma.

Whether to stay in the union or not has been a statistical dead heat in Texas for many years; this is nothing new.
30,000 loons sign an online petition to secede and this should be taken seriously? Texas has ~25.7 million people living in it. So, about 0.1% of the state wants to secede. Funny thing is, I bet that many of them wouldn't be able to articulate their rationale for secession.

If they do secede (which I think will not happen in my lifetime), I want advance notice, because I'm moving there if they do.

Just an update- the petition is at 51,000+ right now.
Looking at the list of people who signed the petition...a fuck ton of them aren't even from Texas. So, it's not even 0.2% of Texans, it's just 51,000 random people.
Frankly, I really wouldn't give that much of a shit if Texas actually left the Union. I mean, if that's what they want to do, ok, go do it. As long as they realize that they'll no longer get any of the benefits of being part of the United States (i.e. no more defense apparatus, no more money from the fed government to fund roads, research, etc.)
To be fair, if Texas left the Union, yes they wouldn't get money from the US federal government, but they wouldn't have to pay into it either. Net, net, it would probably be a huge cost saving for Texas residents.
To be honest, I have trouble believing that. If anything, tons of senior citizens would be completely screwed since they'd lose medicare and social security.
The issue I have with this sort of non-sense comes down to this: where was all this talk during the entire Bush administration? I dont' recall anyone on the right looking to secede after the PATRIOT ACT was passed. I just can't take any of these doomsayers seriously because it's so transparently anti-Obama and not substantively, or at least consistently, anti-big government.
If Texas could overlook two wars that went unpaid for, one of which was essentially unnecessary, and unpaid for entitlements in the form of Medicare Part D, then I'm pretty sure they ought to be ok with what amounts to Health Insurance Reform. Especially when you consider the fact that Texas is one of the least insured states in the nation.
They would barely be paying any taxes
I am pretty sure if you put it to a vote a sizable portion of the population, maybe 5%-15%, would vote "yes" to secession. If a concrete plan were to be drafted and an option given to leave peacefully, probably more. While it is a knee-jerk reaction to Obama being elected, more and more Texan's views are diverging farther from that of California, the east coast, and many of the other areas of the country that ultimately determined this year's election.
Its a state that believes in trying to draw corporate relocation and create a pro-business environment because this ultimately results in more jobs, higher tax revenue (through sales tax), a better quality of life for its people.
If I had any silver bananas left, you'd get one based off the strength of your user name alone. Hahaha.
Texas already has an incredibly pro-business environment. I'm not sure they'd need to secede to make it any better.
