Texas Sheriff opens criminal investigation into Ron DeSantis for "luring" migrants

Pretty clear from this that DeSantis is making a run for president regardless if Trump decides to run.

Summary of investigation:

-DeSantis paid Florida aviation company Vertol Systems $1.5mm to move migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard

-A Venezuelan was paid a fee to tell other migrants that there were job offers waiting for them elsewhere; the migrants were "lured" according to the Sheriff to a hotel, before being flown to Florida then Martha's Vineyard

-Sheriff said the migrants were just left there after a brief photo op

-DeSantis says these were illegal migrants that were abandoned and homeless in Texas; Sheriff says all the migrants were actually here legally and were documented

-DeSantis says all the migrants signed consent forms and were given maps upon arrival; Sheriff says that the migrants were misled and are victims of a crime

Totally agree this was a shitty and ridiculous stunt, but these specific 50 are probably among the luckiest... getting to a very liberal and wealthy area where there was an overflowing of donations and resources, and likely staying in a big East Coast city versus right outside the border area with few jobs

Of course that'll be a lot different if they start busing them off to the desert and dropping them off at the California border

If that was the case, you would be seeing way more than just those 50 make their way up to the Vineyard. Back in San Antonio, they have a big Spanish speaking population and likely a family support network. You wouldn't do something like this without good jobs being promised to you.

There are actual scams like this that happen all the time in developing countries. Rural folk get lured to big cities with promises of high paying jobs, before being dumped in some sweatshop where they don't know anyone. The worst ones house and feed you while promising to pay your income at year end, only to fire you then. Hard to hire lawyers if you can't read and have no money.

Honestly this sort of stunts are sickening; in 62 segregationists tried this same stupid bullshit by sending black people to Massachusetts. It didn't work then, it doesn't really work now. It just makes one group of people looks like subhuman ghouls that seal-clap for whatever shiny toy their strongman waves in their face.

My parents can't stop dick riding this guy and it's pathetic. No desire to improve the country, no desire to make changes. They just have become shells of their former selves, drooling and eating up the latest messaging about anti-Disney, immigrant relocation, anti-esg, anti - Tampa bay rays, anti special Olympics, anti drag show at a club… whatever his latest soup de jure is. I guess the future we're going into is you don't really have to stand for anything as long as you use government power to stand on the neck of anyone we don't like at the moment.

I don't blame my parents for falling for this trap either. They are high school dropouts with drug problems, exactly his demographic. Still, it makes me sad to see some colleagues of mine who have a IQ above room temperature that have a positive thing to say about this whiney mongoloid.

You don't think stopping illegal immigration would improve the country?

I remember when the Democrat party was against illegal immigration and we had stronger borders (read Clintons state of union addresses from the 90s).  Things were a lot better.

I think the real crime here that needs to be investigated is why is Desantis sending people who are fleeing failed leftist policies (Venezuela) to strong leftist areas like Martha's Vineyard and Massachusetts.  If I left a socialist hellhole to find refuge in Desantis's Florida and got sent to live in Massachusetts or DC I'd feel pretty damn betrayed.  Might as well go back to Venezuela.

Stopping illegal immigration would do the exact opposite of improving the country.

We examine the budgetary and economic implications of alternative strategies to addressing undocumented immigrants. In particular, we focus on the implications of immediately and fully enforcing current law, and find that it would be fiscally and economically costly. The federal government would have to spend roughly $400 billion to $600 billion to address the 11.2 million undocumented immigrants and prevent future unlawful entry into the United States. In order to remove all undocumented immigrants, each immigrant would have to be apprehended, detained, legally processed, and transported to his or her home country. In turn, this would shrink the labor force by 11 million workers and reduce real GDP by $1.6 trillion. The fiscal and economic costs are illustrated in Table 1.

America has to spend 400-600 billion on deportations, loses 11 million workers, and as a result hundreds of billions less going to fund social security and Medicaid, and a total of 1.6 trillion on the real GDP.  "They're stealin our jerbs" has to be the biggest myth of all time.

Disgusting, and pretty a damning indictment on the 2022 Republican voter base that this is the kind of cruel stunt Desantis feels he needs to pull to win the nomination.

At least this will be a nice wake up call to the Romney/Youngkin wing of the party who wanted badly to pretend Desantis was Trump without the baggage and act like MAGA never happened. The party is rotten and they deserve 20 years in political Siberia.

There's a portion of the country that is fed up with illegal immigration.  They vote for policies to end it and control it. They live near the border and deal with this on a daily basis. This is Florida and Texas.

There's a portion of the country that is not only ok with it, but encourages it.  They believe in open borders and providing free HC, college, benefits to these people.  They even refuse to use the word "illegal" immigrant because "no person is illegal".   They vote for policies to support this position. This is NYC, Boston, Chicago, DC.

Why not send the illegal immigrants to these areas?

Frankly I think they should be sent out of the country, but if some areas of the country are more receptive to this, why not send them there?

Plenty of people want more migrants in the work force, everyone from the mayor of NYC to red state farmers are trying to lobby congress to pass immigration reform.  Republicans are the ones standing in the way of it.

How, specifically, was it "cruel"? Be specific.

What's actually cruel is the Democrats luring migrants to the U.S. for cheap labor and to change the voting demographic in red states, regardless of the rape, murder, and accidental death they endure on the travels here.

Immigrants, legal and illegal, are actually far less likely to commit violent crimes than native born Americans.

And it's Republicans who lure migrants for cheap labor.  There is an obvious solution to illegal immigration, which Democrats have long been pushing for.  Make legal immigration easier!  The reason there are tons of illegal migrants is because it is exceptionally difficult to immigrate legally.  Open up the borders in the sense of actually allowing people who want to come, to come - then you put them on the tax rolls and make it impossible, or more difficult, for business owners to exploit their labor for starvation wages.  Then there is no more "job stealing" or anything like that.  Republicans want a wedge issue but also don't want to upset donors who exploit illegal immigrants for cheap labor, so solving the issue does nothing for them.  Any intelligent person realizes there is no way to stop illegal immigration, not effectively, which is why it doesn't get done.  So, as per usual, the typical GOP response is to bluster, blame, and keep avoiding a solution, because modern American conservatism is opposed to actually solving anything.

And for what it's worth, it's cruel to traffic human beings halfway around the country on the promise that they'll be given jobs and a new life when you know that isn't the case.  The fact that the people of Martha's Vineyard stepped up and acted in a humane, compassionate manner does not retroactively excuse Mr DeSantis of cruelly misleading people with promises he knew to be false, since the obvious point of his stunt was to dump migrants into a wealthy liberal area and then crow about how they don't want those people either.  Again, lets not lose sight of the fact that Mr DeSantis trafficked people from Texas to Florida before sending them on.  For a photo op. Given how miserable traveling is in America in 2022, I'd argue the extra leg is cruelty in and of itself!

To all the screeching idiot liberals that have already infested the comments trying to claim that this is somehow HuMaN tRaFfIcKiNg (but it totally wasn't when Biden was dropping migrants off in random States in the dead of night). I'll be writing my Congressman that all of the border states should be doing this. Why should these desperate people be forced to stay in these hateful right-wing shitholes when they can benefit from the liberal Shangri-La of CA, NY, CT, etc. who will welcome them with open arms? This seems like the perfect solution to the border crisis - direct them to the States that so eagerly welcome them in. And if they don't like, they're clearly racist! If they don't want them, then maybe the people living there should stop voting for politicians and policies that are letting them all in in the first place. Novel concept I know.

DeSantis offered 50 migrants - not 500, not 5,000, fucking 50 - the opportunity to hop on a plane to one of the richest zip codes in the world - which is now suddenly claiming they have a HoUsInG cRiSiS (nevermind that over 40% of all properties in Martha's Vineyard are literally VACANT MANSIONS because they are not the owner's primary residence - all of these people could've been housed easily). A place that is part of a Sanctuary State e.g. somewhere these people can "legally" reside and get benefits, whereas if they were caught in many of these border states they would be put into jail and/or processed then deported. How does this make any sense?

You don't care that there are HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of these people swarming over the border every month into cities and towns with a fraction of the resources of Martha's Vineyard. 50 people can suffocate in the back of a trailer to get into this country and it'll be featured in the news for a couple of hours, but send them to a rich white liberal suburb and you'll get wall to wall news coverage for days about how it's a callback to pre-civil rights discrimination in the South (which was ironically carried out by Democrats). You are pathetic.

Leftists continue to proclaim their love & support for illegal immigrants and reinforce their political virtue by supporting the policies that encourage these people to engage ACTUAL human traffickers to get here. But the second they're sent to the backyard of the wealthiest people in this country it's a crisis. Peak NIMBY. This issue has become one of the most perfect example of leftist hypocrisy and highlights just how pathetic each and every one of them are when it comes to actually facing the consequences of their own policies.

Edit:

Aaaand OP is full of shit, as predicted. Consent form has been released. These people knew exactly where they were going. They acknowledged they would be leaving Texas and going to locations in other Sanctuary States (unspecified) before reaching their final destination of MA. Any claim that "they were promised education & job opportunities" - sure, they were promised opportunities - not guarantees - which are only available to them in Sanctuary States like CA on account of them being illegal immigrants who entered the country illegally (the fact they decided after commiting that crime to try and make asylum claims that are now being processed does not change that they are still here illegally; there was nothing stopping them from applying for asylum in Mexico). Nothing about what DeSantis did was illegal. These people should be tossed out on their asses on the other side of the border but instead they're being let in, just like leftists keep begging for, and sent to the States that want them so badly. Cope and seethe.

Goodnight, thanks for playing, and go fuck yourself.

Excuse my skepticism for highly doubting the framing/that those "promises" were made. If that's the case sure, maybe there's a case for fraud, but it's not like the government owes any honesty to people who aren't US citizens and entered our borders illegally. As far as I'm concerned they could round these people up with promises of whatever they can come up with then dump them on the other side of the border for all I care - they don't have a right to be here end of story. Oh the horror of being told you're going to Boston and instead waking up in Martha's Vineyard, who could imagine such a terrible fate.

First off, whether a bunch of migrants are capable of understanding what they were signing is debatable.  It seems as though most of them believe they were lied to, which makes far more sense than all 50 of them understanding the concept of surrendering any legal rights.

Leftists continue to proclaim their love & support for illegal immigrants and reinforce their political virtue by supporting the policies that encourage these people to engage ACTUAL human traffickers to get here. How you can possibly argue this, when those migrants were given an actual warm welcome andd not, you know, bused back to Florida, is beyond me.  The people of Martha's Vineyard put their money where there mouth is, which is more than you can say for anyone on the right, by coming together to help those people and not... you know, use them for a cheap photo op and then engage in human trafficking.  The crisis is that you've got a governor in Florida busing in immigrants from out of state in order to then send them to other parts of the country.  I could just as easily argue that Texans love gun violence, and say that instead of jailing murderers we should send them to Houston.  You'd say "straw man, that's bullshit!" and you'd be correct, except that your engaging in the same shit.  Liberals don't like illegal immigration.  We think legal immigration should be easier.  Republicans dislike brown people, not illegal immigrants.  This is obvious enough because the only illegal immigrants that we hear are problems are the ones from South and Central America - can't ever recall hearing Hannity rant about the French gal overstaying her visa.

Most people on this thread will be pro-illegal immigration. Why?

Illegal immigrants are willing to accept a much lower wage relative to locals. That means more cost-cutting and synergies and more profits for many on this forum. Higher margins will also lead to higher stock prices as more people shift to equity, increasing the value of investments that people on here hold.

Of course that means the working class and the poor locals will see wage supression and have a worse quality of life, but who cares? Money is money am i right ? /s

100%, when I chat with my liberal hippie co-workers at lunch, they say we shouldn't deport dreamers because they really want to lower American wages so the S&P500 goes up

We all know the real reason liberal hippies support illegal immigration. It makes them feel morally superior. They love the idea that they can feel morally superior without actually doing anything, by "generously" offering up the resources of other people

I agree with the slippery slope sentiment, but I truly think this needs to happen. It has been made abundantly clear by many of the border states that this is a problem they are not equipped to deal with. The Feds are worthless and pretending that there is no crisis, and the blue states who support and enable these policies aren't having to face any of the consequences. If anything I think it arguably makes the most sense for all of these illegal migrants to be sent to sanctuary states since they're the ones encouraging them to make the trip. They're free to invite as many people into the country as they want so long as they take responsibility for all of them as far as I'm concerned. But if they can't, then that should be a clear signal to everyone involved that changes need to be made.

I would much rather these people aren't here in the first place so they don't get used as political pawns, but they are here and something needs to be done. Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette.

People should never be used as political pawns regardless of their immigration status.

It's a very slippery slope doing this, and politicians love nothing more than sliding down slippery slopes...

People shouldn't be used as political pawns but they should be used as political rooks and bishops for a political checkmate? The Left is literally using these people to flood red states to change the voting demographic. There is no other explanation for why they would go into convulsions over having people shipped to D.C., Chicago, NYC, and Martha's Vineyard. If we are going to make chess analogies, DeSantis didn't use them as political pawns--they were used as political queens. It was a huge victory, exposing the Left for the rank hypocrites they are.
