whoa whoa whoa, not totally back, just wanted to poke my head in. got a baby on the way, buying out a partner, and candidly spending more time sparring and reading than caring about finance these days
thanks for the callout though bro, hope you're well
same thing I've always done (partner in a PWM practice), just working less hours because I'm at a good income level and would rather sharpen the saw growing MSD/HSD than try to move up rankings lists
quality of life >>> quantity of production is the current mantra
personally? training BJJ 3-5x a week on top of other stuff (lifting, walking, jogging, swimming, surfing), started my 5th & 6th languages (fluent in 4 now), volunteering a bit, writing a little (privately, not for the public, maybe never), and just battening down the hatches for when my son arrives because all of the above will take a backseat to him until we get into a new groove
everything gets harder as you get older, but I'd argue it's less because of the brain and more because of other commitments. yes there is solid science that by the time you get to high school your ability to have a native level accent is gone, but beyond that you can still become very fluent, I've fooled latin Americans into thinking I'm from Spain, Italians that I'm from Italy (and Spain when they heard my Spanish), and so forth, and I didn't really dive deep into this until my 30s. another neat thing I've discovered is the more you force your brain to do, the more you find out it can do
as far as what's most effective, just watch the video below. I mimicked everything he talks about and it helped me loads. I made lessons with a tutor my foundation (language parent, in the video), and would have them frequently, no matter how basic my level was. I supplement with daily duolingo but that's probably the least emphasis for me. beyond that, I get loads of input and don't worry if I don't understand it all - podcasts, YouTube, TV, news, and books. I read books in my TL (I have Nassim Taleb's incerto in 4 languages now), starting with books I know well that are translated, then going with originals (LLMs are great for establishing a reading plan). beyond that I seek out opportunities to speak my languages in the wild. I am part of an Italian cultural society, conduct business in 5 languages now (albeit occasionally), do volunteering in Spanish (speaking, tutoring, translating)
so in conclusion, it's not one thing, it's consistency with a focus on speaking + varied input

I'm curious on your approach to language learning - it gets harder as you get older so what have you found most effective?
