To Beard or Not to Beard - Part 2
Recently, I bought this electric razor and I was not sure if it would work well on full hair growth. Surprisingly, it works better than a razor. I never planned on having a full on lumber jack style beard but I thought about letting the goatee go for about 1 month. I never made the month and actually only made it one week. I just found that after a few days, the growth gets a little annoying. At the moment, I am sporting the intern look but I think what works best for me is the 2-3 day scruff look around the goatee.
What works for you?
I'm bearded from my sideburns all the way across. I keep it pretty light - a bit thicker than a 5 o'clock shadow, but at the same time groomed & trimmed nicely. I line myself up probably 1-2 times a week, and will go babyface again probably once every 1-2 months to encourage healthy hair growth and redistribution.
There's a slight stigma in finance that beards are unprofessional. It's bullshit. I've never caught flack from any MD or supervisor, and besides a couple of friendly jabs from coworkers, no one has even mentioned it. I like my beard, and that's all that matters! If you like rocking the scruff, I think it's great as long as you keep it clean.
To expand, cleanliness matters above everything. The quality of hair will always exceed the quantity, so as long as you sit down and line up your face then anything will look great. May take a couple of weeks to get the routine down, but you'll be rocking the beard and feeling good about it in no time. Not sure what razor you use but I can't recommend the Phillips Norelco enough - my mom got me a new one for Christmas last year, and I haven't even taken it out of the packaging yet since the one I bought for myself in 2016 has worked so well. Maybe I'll see what the new one has to offer!
I'm bearded too. Also keep it light and trimmed. No ZZ Top style. But no mustache, can't stand that. I've noticed that it's the kids in their 20's still who are clean shaven - baby faced. Everyone I work with over 28 all has a beard.
Very much agreed about cleanliness. Keep the lines clean. I mentioned shaving the mustache every day, but it's also shaving up the neckline and the cheeks to get rid of the spares.
financeabc, this is also great advice so I'll tag you so I can reply to both of you. I personally keep the mustache since the whole thing flows together, but the mustache is single-handedly the most 'annoying' part of having facial hair. In my fifteen or so years of being able to grow facial hair, any razor burn, bumps, or sloppy cleanup is ALWAYS on that little area. It's a pretty mild complaint though, LOL.
Also want to hit on the bare shave point, pretty important - as is with the 'line', the goal is pure contrast. Full beard on one side of the line, zero hair on the other. So echoing what Audio said, cleaning up the cheeks and ESPECIALLY the neck will do you well in the long run. When I say the neck, I mean EVERYWHERE - you'd be surprised at the amount of hair that pops up in places like under your ears (on the side), and in the little groove below your jawline. Keeping that clean will totally remove any 'scraggle' effect that could cause it to look messy, no matter how well-trimmed you are.
Lastly, super glad you got the Norelco. It's really a great razor, and there are tons of attachments that come with it. Not sure if yours came with a nose hair trimmer, but you will learn to love that too - keeping trimmed up there is equally important. As for moisturizing, I use a couple of different methods that may be of interest:
Side note - O&A has been my go-to for hygiene products for years now. It's pretty expensive, but you get what you pay for and I'll happily pay for a pretty face. I've got their shampoo & scalp scrubs, conditioner, body soaps, deodorant, beard oil, and even the pomade. Like, the whole nine yards, full lineup. I'd say it's worth it. They recently started doing starter kits to, so check 'em out.
Just mix and match until you find what ya need. Congrats on becoming a man! ;)
I just started using Philips Norelco, haha. I am very surprised it works so well. I love the fact that you can press hard and not have to worry about a cut. The thing I do not like about the beard is it seems to make moisturizing the face more difficult.
What model of Norelco? Seems to be multiple online.
Full beard, but clean and maintained. This is my wild corporate rebellion but it’s great to see it becoming more common.
I don't know what works for you, but I used to have a full beard. It wasn't a lumberjack beard, but it was quite long. However, I decided to get rid of it and now have a goatee. I get a lot of compliments on my goatee, and the best part is that it's so simple to maintain. I also use beard care products to avoid infections. I grow a full beard and shave the goatee. A goatee is an attractive facial hairstyle. The look is so popular that many celebrities are sporting it.
On a related note, I have found that retinol helps to improve facial hair growth. Retinol helped with my goatee area so I decided to use it on my side burns. I was not expecting much but it worked pretty well. There must be something in the retinol that either stimulates hair growth or possibly it improves the skin, which makes it easier to grow hair.
I have a massive beard - I should be easy to spot in the 27 Sept NYC meetup.
I have never seen someone so enthusiastic a beard.
20% of chicks absolutely love a thick, long beard.
