I dont really care about Griner either way but I’m not mad about the swap. Bout has been in prison for 10 years. He has no empire to go back to. He was getting out before Griner would have anyways.
Whalen (the former marine everyone is mad about) was discharged from the Marine Corps for larceny when he was caught stealing someone’s SSN and writing bad checks. If you think Russia sees a D list athlete who they arrested on clearly trumped up charges the same as Whalen — who was a corporate security company exec charged with espionage for receiving confidential documents — you’re just kidding yourself.
They were never going to give up Whalen for Bout and if they’d swapped the teacher who’s in prison there (Fogel), people would be pissed too. Fogel was also a politically unimportant person who brought marijuana into Russia.
Yeah, it really seems like Viktor Bout doesn't have any influence whatsoever anymore......
