What colleges you guys looking at

I am currently a high schooler with a shit 3.4 gpa and a 27 on my act I only took it once.

I am probably going to go to indiana university - Bloomington

Other schools I looking at are USC, Wisconsin-Madison , and baruch

What are your guys thoughts on school?

Im from NY and Baruch is not that great. IU and USC are pretty good epically if you get into the IBanking program at IU. Wisconsins business school is good as well but not at the same level as IU and USC

"If Henry Ford had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." -Steve Jobs

IU is one of my top choices however I visited George Washington the other day and the program was really appealing. They have some good opportunities for studying abroad like the London School of Economics and they have a lot of opportunities for networking. They have a trading room and there are a lot of group projects. A lot of the professors are adjunct professors as well and you can get the real applicable curriculum through that. I didn't think IU looked that fun when i visited though. Honestly It seemed boring. GW seemed a lot more of a fun place to be. I have a 3.3 GPA Expecting a 2000 on SAT after this next one in October.

This next act (Im in Missouri no SAT unless I drive 2 hours away) I really studied and prepped this time. Will really decide between IU or USC. GW seems interesting I'm going to look into. How do those trading centers in campus work, are they open just for everyone? Cause I know umich has one but from what I understood mainly grad students used it. And can you expand on how IU was boring? I mean it's more a campus compared to GW or NYU where you are in a large city the nightlife would be totally different

Sham Wow:

GW was really a turn off until i saw the business school. I felt like i didn't like it because it didn't seem too different. Then I walked outside and the campus was great. Nice city and you are in the middle of everything. I got a private tour of the business school and they have the nicest building ever. The trading Room is open to anyone that is grad or undergrad anytime you want to use it unless there are classes going on in it. They are all equipped with bloomberg terminals. Every student in the classes is given 600 grand to invest and as a grad you are given 2 million to invest. There are great networking ops. I went to IU and got a tour of it as well. The campus is fucking huge and there are really nice fraternities there is an IU golf course and the business school is gigantic, The campus is not that pretty and there really is nothing to do except party. If thats what you like to do. I love to party but i want more stuff to do that is in a city environment. There aren't any internship opportunities terribly close by in the city like there are at places like nyu and GW and i plan to be doing internships all year round. I liked GW's London school of economics full junior year abroad thing because it is the best school in the entire world for econ. However the thing about IU is that if you are smart enough to get into the business program and can maintain a 3.5 GPA and you get into the Asset Management or the Investment banking workshop there you will 100% get a job on wall street. Gwashington doesn't have the same thing but the job placement is tremendous. Last year they had 88% placement which most schools have but you should see the places the people work at. all the big bulge brackets. I Just feel like i wouldn't have trouble getting a job. Then again I think no matter where i go it will work out in the end. I think you guys will do fine too you all seem pretty smart and ahead of the game. Hope the information was helpful to you. Just remember its really what you think of the school that matters. I should have no say in your choice of the school

Hey Guys, I am also a high school student. Nice to see there a decent sized group on here. I will only be a sophomore, and I go to a top public school(Top 20 in USA for Math and Science). I have a really challenging curriculum and do many ECs. My GPA this year was a 4.0, all honors classes and 4 APs, but I don't expect it to finish that way. I recently took a practice SAT and got 2340, so there is some room for improvement there. So what has motivated you guys to seek a career in Finance? Are you guys currently doing or planning on doing any activities related to Finance during high school? What courses are you taking and what activities do you participate in?

Good start so far man I have no doubt that if you continue to do as well as you are now you will do fine. I am the founder and leader of investment club at school and we are in charge of several thousand dollars that we will be donating to a cancer center where i live. I am a part of this leadership club at school and I manage 5000 dollars of my own money. I am the Executive treasurer of my entire high school as well (elected). I am taking accounting, Ap Government, Modern Legal Issues, World Literature, Honors Calculus and the required religion course. I am currently doing an internship at a local hedge fund every monday and wednesday morning and we basically just sit around and trade all day. Its really kind of a good experience and the guy is an absolute genius and he really understands what is important. Other than that I don't play any sports because of injuries. What motivated me most in finance was definitely my sophomore economics class. We did a stock market game and I won it and i just loved the feeling of winning it. Then i realized that it takes no skill and i couldn't actually make money in real life doing it until i got better. So i just started researching every minute i had off. Ive read at least 50 books on investing and I'm particularly interested in FOREX and stocks generally. Commodities are interesting too but they are little bit out of my price range.

Thanks man. Wow you are doing a lot of awesome stuff. I do many typical extracurriculars such as Model United Nations, Youth in Government, History Bowl, History Bee, Quiz Bowl, World Quest, TEAMS Engineering competition, International Affairs Club, Politics Club, Geography and Cartography Club, Chess Club, Stock Market Club, USA Biology Olympiad, volunteering, and a few other things. I recently became interested in Finance, because it seemed like a fit for me. I took AP Economics this past year, and I became quite interested. I am currently taking an Intro Finance course online through UMich Ross and I am enjoying it. I have started to read some investing and economic theory books and I find it interesting. I am also interested in Forex. Since a young age(about 4), I was always studying and reading about the world, such as history, geography, and culture. As I grew older, I started to understand politics and economics, which has sparked me interest in forex and global commodities. I have kinda always been a "thinker" if you know what I mean. So, I am interested in the Investment Club you mentioned. How did you start it and what exactly do you do? Also, how did you get your hedge fund internship? That seems really cool.

Cheers

That seems pretty school. My school's Stock Market Club already participates in a simulation style game, but what your doing is a step up from that. I will try to see if anyone at my school would like to do that with me. Great Idea! Thats great how you built up a network for that. I have done a similar thing, but all of my connections have been made with doctors... I do not know many people who work in Finance, as my parents are in the science. I guess I will have to resort to cold calling...

Nah my parents are doctors too, don't bother cold calling I'm sure your parents know a Ton of bankers. My dads best friend is the senior vp at Wells Fargo. I'm sure you can just ask your parents

Yeah I guess I will ask them, but I don't think they know any. They are immigrants from India, and I think most of everyone the are connected with is in the Medical profession.

So what are some good finance books you guys have read?

Intelligent investor, all of the Market Wizards, Security Analysis, Big Short, technical analysis of futures. Babypips.com, Liars Poker the Joel green blatt book

Yeah, I have Technical Analysis of Futures, and the Market Wizards. I haven't got around to reading them all yet. How are Bull's Eye Investing, Charting the Stock Market: The Wyckoff Method, and Trading in the Global Currencies Market? I have those books as well.

I have never heard Of or read any of those. I'm sure they are good. How I made 2 million in the stock market is good too

Thanks, I will get started on the reading. Have any of you read Irving Fisher's The Theory of Interest? Great book. That babypips website looks awesome as well. I have started their course. Are you guys interested in other subject besides Finance?

Nope, I dedicate all my time to finance. I like history and Math but they are a part of finance anyways. I thought i wanted to be a doctor but i found out i didn't

Interesting, I have a diversified interest group, as I enjoy finance, economics, math, history, politics, international relations, biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and philosophy. Are you guys interested in any quantitative fields in finance? Do you guys have applicable skills, such as programming or multilingual? I assume you are well versed in Microsoft Office.

I'm not well versed In Microsoft office I know how to squeak by. I liked chemistry and I like politics. I'm libertarian. Im interested in quantitative trading very much so but I think that I will probably be fundamental when I work. It makes more sense and is better than quant.

I am looking into other fields but besides computer sciences not really interested. I have wanted to go into HedgeFunds since I was a kid and a family friend brought me with him to shadow at work. I have since interned/Shadowed for quite a while with him. He is local and small, but has had multiple 100%+ return years. He is the founder of the fund so I expereinced alot. I have read a lot of books he suggested, How I made 2 million dollars in the stock market was one. Others include: Jesse livermore remincenses of a Stock Operator, and How to trade in stocks, My Own Story by Bernard Baruch, all of O'neils books, 24 essential lessons and How to make money in stocks, all the Market Wizards, and tons of half read E-Books, I also subscribe to Ivestors buisness daily and read it frequently. I plan on one day moving in to HFs but I kind of also interested in other areas of high finanace.

As for Quant, I think that with a computer science degree or a similar Quant type degree, I would probably explore other things than finance, or start my own quant fund after gaining realative expereince or something.

The thing with computers is it is really easy to steal all of someones work especially in scripting and such, idk why probably because of scripts ive seens on sketychy websites that people steal and abuse/claim they made type things really turns me away for every writing programs for someone.

Go to Indiana if you are looking into that stuff. I just got in there as an economics major

Hey guys,

I'm a senior right now and I've pretty much just finished applying to colleges. I have a 3.75 GPA, 2100 SAT, and subject test scores all above 700. I think my top schools right now are NYU, Michigan, UVA, Vandy, and Wharton (hah). I've already been accepted to Indiana, but I'm now just waiting on my petition for Kelley Direct Admit since I applied with a 3.67 (.03 off of the DA requirement).

I'm interested in investment banking since I think that it's perhaps one of the best career opportunities for someone fresh out of college to jump into. For many people, it's a huge stepping stone to success in the business world, and I hope to become a part of the industry a few years from now.
