What do you guys do at the weekends?

I get kind of bored at the weekend sometimes. It feels like during the day I just end up watching Netflix / playing games. I have various hobbies (Jiu Jitsu, Snowboarding, Climbing, Gym etc) but only have limited energy to do them. I enjoy watching movies and meeting with friends too, but it still feels like I spend too much time wasting away in front of a screen.

Looking for some inspiration for some more hobbies.

Based on the context, here are some suggestions for weekend activities:

  1. Watching College Football: One user mentioned that their favorite thing to do on the weekends is to watch college football and drink beers with their friends. This could be a fun way to spend your time if you're into sports.

  2. Investing Time in Productive Activities: Another user suggested finding two things that you consider to be productive uses of your time and forcing yourself to spend time on them every weekend. This could be anything from learning a new skill, working on a personal project, or even reading a book.

  3. Taking Advantage of Your City: If you live in a city, there are likely many events and activities happening every weekend. This could be anything from author readings at book stores, museums, concerts, and so on.

  4. Meditating: If you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, meditating can be a great way to relax and rejuvenate yourself. All you need is 15 minutes and the willingness to sit quietly.

  5. Participating in a Weekly Activity: One user suggested finding something that brings you joy each week, such as a Saturday basketball league, lifting weights/going for a run, or a weekly brunch with friends.

Remember, the key is to find activities that you enjoy and look forward to. This will make your weekends feel more fulfilling and less like you're just wasting time.

I have found myself in your scenario as well. I have hobbies and friends, but also have a wife who knows no one where we live. Much of my weekends end up the same, get coffee/eat, then we sit around, then go eat, then sit around more etc. I do jits as well, but I do it Monday-Thursday, sometimes Saturday morning.

What I have started doing is studying. I’ve started to dedicate my down time to learning more financial trading (NYMEX), and fundamental modeling stuff. I work on the physical side of the business and get virtually no exposure to our financial trading guys, I chat with them and what not but just no time to pick their brains etc…

Idk what you do for your job but I think maybe working to your next step in your downtime will help. I just picked up the book Dynamic Hedging, recommended by a friend, and have been sinking my teeth into it, taking notes on it etc.

This is what I've been doing but it feels kind of...sad. I'm on a gap year working a 40 hour corporate gig, looking to get into either academic research or trading. I enjoy learning about them, but it still feels unfulfilling doing it in my free time.

I guess I always thought that once you finish school, most of the learning happens on the job, or at least in 'office hours'.

Having said that, maybe I should start learning about something more 'creative'. I've always had an interest in film, philosophy, music and architecture. Maybe some books on these will be good - thank you!

I like to read but not everyone likes that. Spend a lot of time doing that on nights/weekends.

Other than that I work out, watch sports, play video games, and watch random shows and movies. Pretty normal shit.

Trying to get into golf - maybe that will become a bigger hobby.

I would love to get into reading. I try it constantly to get it to 'stick', as my mum is an avid reader. But it never sticks for me unfortunately. Maybe haven't found a genre that clicks.

Do you feel 'guilty' watching movies/playing video games at all? I feel like I'm not only wasting time, but 'my life' in general. But then feels stupid because I'm not doing anything instead. Maybe I'm just letting societal judgement cloud my vision.

I don’t feel guilty about it, no. it’s important to decompress. Our minds aren’t meant to be engaged 24/7.

My tip for you on reading would be to not try to view it as something “productive.” Read things you find interesting or enjoy. Whether that’s fiction or nonfiction. It shouldn’t be a chore otherwise you’ll never do it consistently. Once you get into the groove you’ll find it’s easier to read more widely.
