Stupid americans won't vote to implement a better car distribution method in the US.

what do you mean by this?

I've heard nothing but good things. I don't know much about the brands as I haven't had to go car shopping in years, but I'd look into the maintenance aspect of owning a Korean car too. I know with my car, I can get parts relatively easily, do a majority of the regular maintenance on my own, and don't need to worry about it. My dad has a Benz and was bitching to me about the difficulty of doing an oil change because of how they are built. Assuming the maintenance is reasonable, it's worth a test drive at least.

Mom ditched her last VW for one.  Not bad.  Still can't buy one with a manual.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

My family had some Hyundai sedan years ago when we last lived abroad, I think it might have been in Europe but I can't remember now. I remember we got it because it was one of the few vehicles at the time (and I think this is still largely the case) that was automatic since my mom can't drive manual. We never had any issues with it, maintenance was a breeze.

The Koreans are taking this seriously and it shows. So much so that Hyundai poached the former head of BMW's M division to lead their new N team.

As an anecdote, about a month ago I saw a new Genesis SUV out of the corner of my eye and said "Oh cool. The new Bentley SUV!" only to be corrected by a buddy that "Nope! That's the Genesis SUV!"

Cars are cars. Any car will get you from point A to B.

Shoes are shoes - any shoe will get you from point A to point B.

Korean cars as a whole have come a long long way. In the mainstream consumer market, they've consistently been the leaders in offering a balance of value, latest tech and overall, just decent vehicles. Not to mention, they're doing a relatively good job in EVs as well.

However, when it comes to the luxury end of the market, despite having a strong product, there's still some work ahead of them. As someone who was recently cross shopping for a luxury SUV, the GV70 was top of my list and it really did tick most boxes, looks, comfort, build quality, design. It was a bit lacking in terms of overall engine/transmission performance and driving dynamics which is why I ended up going with a BMW X3 instead.

But I see two significant problems with Genesis:

  1. Brand recognition: you could argue this shouldn't matter but at the end of the day, it's a luxury product. This may just resolve itself over time but as it stands, the fact that people are mistaking a Genesis for a Bentley or etc. , isn't necessarily a good thing. They have gotten better at having a cohesive design language through their line-up I will say.
  1. The bigger issue in my view is the current dealer situation, which is more than enough to detract any potential luxury car buyer. I get that Genesis is trying to get around this by offering delivery and pickup for vehicles, but if you were to go for a test drive, making someone pull-up to a Hyundai dealership already leaves a sour taste. Not only are many Hyundai dealerships overcrowded and have poor service, reps are applying a volume, aggressive sales approach, which may work for selling Elantras but won't for a luxury product. All in all, I really hope Genesis is able to make more of a splash in the luxury market, they have a great product (albeit not completely special) but are currently hindered by a few significant issues.

This is well said. My dad recently purchased a GV70, while my aunt has an X3. The X3 definitely has a better engine and no one tunes the ZF 8 speed better than BMW. I also think BMW quality has gotten significantly better in the last few years and I think their interiors are currently better than anyone, especially with how they blend touch screens with physical buttons.

With that being said, Hyundai/Kia/Genesis has the best warranties out there, and my dad's GV70 comes with WAY more standard features, vs the typical german nickel and diming for things that should be standard. It's a good-looking vehicle (for a crossover), luxurious, and offers a lot for the money.

They seem to be getting better and better. The spinoff Genesis brand seemed like a great move. The Telluride SUV looks pretty nice. KIA has a new logo.

Lol, I would not be seen dead in one.

Lol, no thanks. As a self confessed car snob. I just cannot bring myself to even go close to a south Korean car. Japanese, yes but SK? No thanks.

bro today I saw this Genesis SUV pass me from the opposite way and definitely thought the front was a Bentley lol
