What do you want to be when you grow up?

I’ve been feeling burnt out and disinterested in my current role, but still don’t know what i want to do long term. I have experience in banking and PE, and am now 4 years into my career. Current firm has good long term upside, but learning curve has started to flatten and i want to try something new to feel like im learning again and be excited to go to work. However, looking at new roles is scary due to the ~3+ year commitment required and uncertainty of exit opps without clear direction on what i want. For those who have it figured out:
1) How did you figure out what you wanted to do long term?
2) How did you decide when to make the switch to a new firm/industry/role/etc?

  • Read Give and Take by Adam Grant, it’ll give you a good perspective on life and happiness
  • I decided to pursue finance because I liked the people pursuing, found it to be challenging/interesting and wanted to get paid more.
  • if I won the lottery, I’d become a teacher and a coach and have a ton of kids, I think that would make me the most happy.
  • when I was in HS, I had retarded ideas about becoming a chef, an astronaut, a physical therapist or a house husband even though I’m probably not a good fit for any of those.
