What industry are lawyers, accountants, lobbyists and consultants a part of?
This was sparked by some other guys thread asking if accounting was part of the financial industry but now I'm curious. If most financial jobs discussed on this forum (IB, PE, HF, AM, PWM, CF) are part of the "financial services industry" but where would that leave the rest of white collar professions?
Are lawyers apart of the "legal services industry"? What about jobs relating to politics like lobbyists? And nearly all professional services like accountants, consultants and actuaries are these guys just not part of an industry? Or is there such thing as a "business industry"?
“Professional services” is usually the term used.
Lawyers are in the legal field, accountants are a type of business consultant whether hired or in-house, and being a lobbyist is a gig in the political world. Different classes of things being compared here, and any of these three could be a consultant, as “consultant” is a role rather than a profession.
The main thing is that these people don't really come up with and execute their own ideas. Most of these services are paid for and then they are responsible to tell you the correct information for you to then make a decision.
All of these roles don't actually tell a client what to do although can deff spin it a certainway.
