What's the meaning of life ?

Like most people I used to believe in god and religions. After reading some books about spiritualism, religions and human brain I came to the conclusion that we as humans are so scared of death that we want to believe there is something waiting for us, good or bad.

When I stopped believing to god and religions, I felt so free that I can't even explain with words. I knew that praying and expecting miracles wasn't going to happen unless I do something about it. But, after some years when I started to think about meaning of life, my thoughts have started to effect my decisions. I always wanted to live a normal life while working at a corporate job, and travel during holidays with my sexy wife and child. Recently, after thinking about it for days I came to the conclusion that this is the worst way any human can spend their life. Most of us have limited time, at most 100-140 years, is it worth to work 40 hours for 30 days of holiday you will go to once a year at a crappy hotel, and spend rest of that time seeking dopamine (watching tv, netflix, tiktok/playing video games etc.). Then using most of your salary for your child' education to hope that he/she will be a good person, or worry that your wife may leave you and get half of your salary as a child support. Let's say you don't want to work at a corporate job, and have kids. You decided to live a simple life like most Scandinavian people, you want to get into a poly relationship and not have kids. Then, you want to work 6 hours a day, and spend rest of your time resting at mountains while watching TV. Does any of these lifestyles makes sense to you when you think about it deeply ? The reason suicide and poly relationship rates are so high in Scandinavia is because they're bored as hell. I bet, some people will come and say something like this '' Oh, I bet you prefer to suck your boss' dick for another 40 hours in finance''. Yes, because I value productivity over meaningless actions that I will never remember of. I'm sure all of you have used some kind of social media app, and probably spent thousands of hours using it since your childhood. If you try to remember those moments, you wouldn't be able to remember more than 5 minutes of it. It's because you were seeking dopamine at those moments, scrolling through TikTok/Instagram is a light version of porn. If you try to remember the good moments you had at your job, even a minute of it will be worth more than spending thousands of hours on a stupid application. Nowadays most people believe that working 40 hours, and spending 40 hours on social media/netflix is better than working 80 hours while boosting your career and expanding your knowledge/connections.

For me, meaning of life is competetion for power/money, knowledge and better lifestyle. Also, if you ever get bored during the competetion you will be able to leave, but if you ever get bored during your ''normal life'', you will never be able to join the competetion.

you're wiser than me purely because you're asking these questions in high school. at your age, I was concerned with getting 3 things: waves, women, and weed

always be curious, live by the cardinal virtues of chastity (not celibacy), temperance, charity, diligence, forgiveness, kindness, and humility; you should be just fine

lastly, treat every major life decision as a bet. sketch out the possible upside and the possible downside, don't take on bad trades, and you should end up in a pretty good place long term

happy to help further if needed, while I have no regrets, there's so much I wish I knew when I was your age

I think you’re dead wrong here. I am not scared of death and many Christians welcome the time when they will be sent to heaven and be away from the evils in this world.

The people afraid of death are usually the ones who know they have not led a good life and don’t know what awaits them on the other side.

For me, I know purgatory probably awaits me on the other side, but if you make it to purgatory, you’re guaranteed a spot in heaven.

Or some shit like that. Pretty true though. In college after reading and interacting with the outside world was able to conclude that my Christian upbringing was mostly BS. I still am not religious - BUT - as you get older you begin to understand the benefits of religion and traditional values. No not in a "dont get married gays" kind of way. But by focus on giving, hard work, family/community, commitment, sacrifice, gratefulness. I've lived a hedonistic lifestyle at times in my teens and 20s and can say it's no foundation to build a life.

Almost everything the bible teaches (wait until marriage for sex, sins, dont love money, etc. etc.) arent from the word of god - but they are from what served a culture and group of people best for hundreds of years, and from that there is a degree of divinity. To throw out those lessons just because they are tied to religion, and think that you know better, is the height of arrogance.

Sounds like Monkey Noises to me.

Are you so sure that it's not from the word of God?  I think what you're saying is actually a big part of what convinces me. So many of the values taught by the Bible make sense and improve your life. Is that an accident or is there really something to a thousands of years old book that predates any modern scientific studies of what makes us tic?

In my opinion, it is much more than the wisdom of generations distilled into a book. Just look at our society today. Could you just imagine the values that would be distilled into a modern Bible now (cancelling people, never forgiving anyone for anything, etc.)? Yet, we have more knowledge today than ever before.

The quote is “The first gulp from the glass of natural sciences will turn you into an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass God is waiting for you,” and it's by Werner Heisenberg. The quote is taken in the context of Heisenberg, Pauli, Bohr, Schrödinger, etc. discovering and advancing quantum mechanics. Since Newton elucidated his three laws of mechanics people had this idea that you could explain the entire universe with physics and the notion of a divine creator or force was unnecessary, but with the discovery of quantum mechanics and the uncertainty inherent in it prevents any sort of deterministic world possible. When you first learn about elementary physics it all seems so even and logical, and you can solve anything, but the more you dive into it (especially when dealing with more macro quantum effects like light wave interaction and physical chemistry) you realize there is so much we still don't know or understand how to explain. A classic example is gravity. We know to a high degree of accuracy how to measure gravity, how it affects spacetime and all it's relativistic properties, etc. but we still don't know how gravity actually exists or works. Those unknowns cannot be answered by science yet, but and the implications of these unknowns are only discovered through philosophy or spirituality (hence the God waiting for you at the bottom).

Your last paragraph could not be further from the truth. The whole point of the Bible is that it is the word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16 "all scripture is God-breathed" I could quote more verses but won't

Also what you say about Biblical principles being tied to morality is true to a certain extent. However, where you miss it is the whole point of Christianity is a relationship with God and all the sins you list are things that prevent us from having that relationship. The whole point is that you are formed to have a relationship with God. This is why I just smile when those who don't believe tell me things like I'm just following rules or I'm living a boring life because I'm not getting stupidly drunk or having pre-marital sex. Nope what's actually happening is that I'm enjoying the privilege of a relationship with a God who is holy

Life doesn't really have "meaning" in the way that we think about it. I do the exact same thing, I spend too much time in my own head brooding over what it all means and it never makes me feel any better, just worse. The reality is that no matter how acid you take or how many hours you engage in this sort of behavior, you're not going to suddenly emerge from your stupor and become some fully self-actualized human living every minute with a purpose.

For me at least I've found the best solution to be taking action, almost regardless of what it is. Go to the gym, clean, meet up with friends, even just finish some extra work, it all in a way takes your mind off these thoughts and gives you some sort of purpose.

Well good thing that you abandoned God for more noble pursuits....

I'm not sure how you went from the idea that life can't be about working a corporate job to get 30 days of holiday to wanting to grind in finance, but I appreciate the idea of your post which I think a lot of people in finance miss, which is to live intentionally. Society is set a certain way, we are pushed certain ideals, etc. which drive our values, versus internally considering what we actually value and acting intentionally. For some that is wealth and a feeling of societal power, for others that is maximizing time with family, for others it's an "atta boy" from someone they look up to. The key is to understand what your goal is and WHY (that it is actually your goal and not something you think is supposed to be your goal due to societal pressures).
