When to take internships off resume
Companies often ask to include employment history for the last 8 years. Should I only list internships on the application?

Are you a student? Then yes, you should.
But to answer the title, maybe when you have a few years of solid work experience.
No, I am not a student.
Not include an internship in a CV (Originally Posted: 07/02/2013)
Hey guys,
I am doing a Pre-MBA internship in a start-up. I am doing mostly business development and product management type work. I realized that the start-up thing is not for me. Before that I worked in banking and corporate development and would like to move back to those fields after bschool. I was wondering what your opinions are for not including it in my CV. Is that dishonest in a resume? I guess I don't want this experience to rise a red flag that I want to work in a start-up and not corporate development or banking.
Thoughts?
You can not include it if you want, but I don't see how it would hurt. If anything, it gives you a great answer to the "Why do you want to come back to banking/corporate development?" question (because you tried something else you thought you might be interested in doing, and, in the course of that, learned that banking/corporate development is where your interests truly lie).
Is the start-up in a vertical in which you have an interest. For example, is it a tech firm and you are interested in joining a TMT group upon graduation
Secondly, if you are interested in joining a firm/boutique with an entrepreneurial culture your biz development experience may impress rather than deter.
It is all in how you present what you have gained from this experience and how it will add value to you as a candidate in IB or Corp Dev.
In an interview, the sidetrack, may be explained and validated.
I strongly suggest that you do not omit it from your CV..
Hey man, As it is just an internship, I don't think it would raise any red flags, and yes, I would say you should include it. Also, otherwise you will have a hole in your resume, which is far worse than an internship that is not exactly in the field of your choice.
Anyhow, if they liked you and you learned something, even if you ultimately decided it wasn't for you, you can definitely get something out of it.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.
Include a non-relevant internship on resume? (Originally Posted: 04/01/2011)
Preparing for FT recruiting in fall at a target
I have freshman and sophomore internships (former is engineering type work, latter is BO at a BB)
This summer (junior summer) I will have FO internship.
Goal is banking/ER/HF
Should put just my FO internship, or put the FO and the BO? In my activities section, I have things like leadership, financial modeling seminars, portfolio mgmt, trading sims.
Option 1: Experience: FO - expecting 5 bullets BO - 2 bullets
Activities: Fin modeling - 3 to 4 bullets Leadership - 3 to 4 bullets
Option 2: Experience: FO - 6 bullets
Activities: Fin modeling - 3 bullets Portfolio mgmt - 2 bullets Leadership - 3 bullets Trading sims - 1 bullet
Of the two options above, which looks better for my target positions? Should I mention portfolio mgmt and trading sims for banking/do they care/does it make it look unfocused?
Include it anyway just to show you have more than one experience and didn't waste your summers. A couple bullet points is all you need and it adds variety to your work experience.
