Whey vs. Muscle Milk
Hi again everyone.
So I've been hearing from a lot of people that instead of breakfast, they usually just have been throwing together shakes in the morning in the place of breakfast, as it's pretty nutritious and can be consumed on the go.
That said, assuming I get a workout in before I begin my day, what powders do you guys recommend? And anyone have any advice on what kind of stuff to drink for breakfast assuming I don't hit the gym?
Thanks
Some people do Meal Replacement Shakes but I would not recommend it.
You can have a protein shake regardless of whether you hit the gym; what you should watch out for is the calorie content relative to what your weight loss / mass gain goals are, and whether a shake helps you balance your macros.
Pick a protein powder depending on how many calories it has and the protein content it contains. In all honesty, whey protein, even the low-calorie ones like ON, are almost 100% of the time a safe pick. I stopped using Muscle Milk ages ago because it's too high in calories / too expensive as opposed to just using whey, in addition to not being as effective as meal replacements either. It's as though MM is stuck between low calorie and meal replacement, and it doesn't do either job as well IMO.
You could make a protein smoothie for a solid 500 calorie start to your day that won't leave you hungry later. Try this out:
Blend real well. You won't be hungry until lunch time or later. Also makes a good late-afternoon solution if you don't need to eat dinner and have the calories to spare.
Overall, protein shakes are clutch.
this sounds pretty great, I'll try this
I've heard protein shakes can cause nasty bloating/gas bc/your body has difficulty digesting it, is this true?
Can be, mainly due to people not reacting well to the milk content (people don't regularly drink that much milk, and a protein shake is just milk with other stuff mixed in). I personally switched to lactose-free milk and no longer get the bloating.
Also, try if you just need the protein and not the calories, drink your shakes with just water. You won't get bloating since it's just water w/ the powder.
Cool, I'll try that out, thanks!
Avoid Muscle Milk - they contain high concentration of unhealthy metals.

I use to the ON brand whey protein and it works well and tastes good. Its also only 120 calories per scoop. Avoid protein shakes that have a lot of extra ingredients. Don't use syntha 6! I got the worst protein farts from it. I also only use water with my shakes also
Contrary to the post above...if you are doing meal replacement, look into BSN's Syntha-6 powder mix. It has a blend of different protein types for longer energy than pure whey. I haven't personally experienced any of those side effects so may be worth just trying. Also a bit more carbs but thats nothing compared to the banana etc you add in.
inb4 everyone suggests ON
Dymatize > ON, come at me bros.
(Oops, I mean brahs.)
Optimum Nutrition's brand of whey protein. It's like bread and butter for a lot of people and has gained a lot of popularity in the last 4-5 years.
I think it's good due to the low calorie content relative to the amount of protein you get: it's like 110 cals and 24g protein, which makes it about 85% pure protein if I got the first two numbers correct.
For pre and post workout meals you want to avoid fats and just eat protein + carbs. Muscle Milk has a bit of fat if I'm not mistaken so I wouldn't use it. Pre/post workout, I take ON whey and get my carbs from oats, yams, ezekial bread, or bananas.
Don't listen to these chubby blokes on here... stick with MM, way better tasting and the sat fat is mcts and burns quickly. Unless you're training for Mr. O while moonlighting as an IB analyst it won't matter anyway. Most whey tastes like junk.
Looks like we have ourselves a regular Jay Cutler here. BicepBrah lol... gimme a break. Go back to the forums on bodybuilding.com, the gentlemen on this forum have no time for roidraged freaks like yourself. Now go shoot yourself up with Deca and hit the gym you rodent!
Chase your protein with a full cup of water to prevent discomfort.
I'm not a fan of MM personally. Here's my go-to recipe for Whey shakes (pretty similar to Kassad's above)
1.5 scoops chocolate whey (I use ON extreme milk chocolate) 10 oz 2% milk 1 tbsp natural peanut butter 1 tbsp flax oil handful of oats
This recipe tastes pretty good, is filling, and it's nutritious. For a better taste and a thicker shake, feel free to throw in frozen fruit (banana is pretty good) and blend. I should note that this is pretty calorically dense (I use it as a mass gainer shake). Taking out oats or pb, and lowering milk to about 8oz will loosen the caloric load and carbs a bit. Also, as stated above, the bloating or gassiness is usually to people who don't take milk too well, so water is always an option (albeit a less satisfying option taste-wise).
I prefer making my own meal replacement rather than getting any blends or mass gainers (they're loaded with all kinds of other crap, and loads of maltodextrin). Personally I use ON whey, but it's pretty much all the same shit.
Whey in general is a waste of money.
First, unless you eat it with food its out of your stomach in 15 minutes.
Second, your body only utilizes the amount of protein it needs; that is, however much your natural testosterone level dictates. The reason body builders can get so big is that the injected testosterone tells your muscle cells to increase their protein use. This is why roided out BB'ers benefit from whey (when it's consumed with meals). You, however, will not.
You will never be significantly more muscular (5-10 lbs) or leaner (unless you're unnaturally fat) than you are this moment. Assuming you hormone levels don't change.
The powders are also all made in China and have veeeery high levels of metals you don't want building up in your body.
Silver Bananas for saving you a fortune. FYI I was a training partner to a pro BB'er for 3 years. He also was a part owner of a supplement company.
This is an absolutely ridiculous statement.
