Which iPad to get?
I want to get an iPad for a variety of reasons but can't decide on which one. I haven't owned Apple products in the past so excuse me this comes across as uneducated. I also never made it to senior associate when I was in IB, so I never had the need to ruin Analysts' days with an illegible mark-up.
Mainly I intend on using it to read books, newspapers (WSJ, Economist, FT), and CIMs / PPTs. There are some other use cases I think I'd use it for, such as using it as a virtual cookbook when I cook - easy to pop it up on the countertop and reference vs currently using my phone. But the overarching reason on why an iPad vs a laptop is ease of use, portability, and not having to deal with a keyboard.
So the question is, which one fits me best? I'm looking at the iPad Pro 11" or iPad Mini.
I like the mini because it reminds me of my Kindle / e-reader, but I think I'd run into issues when reading PDFs / CIMs / IC memos, etc. I also think it would be challenging to write notes in the margin if the screen is that small. I do like the size of it though. It would be so easy to just grab it, sit down, and read whether in bed or on-the-go.
I like the 11" Pro because it offers the capability to easily review PDFs. The 11" is just about standard A4 page size so no need to zoom in most likely. This would also likely work pretty well for reading digital print newspapers in the mornings during my commute instead of scrolling on my phone or buying a print copy at the train station. The hesitation I have here is the size. Would 11" be too much if I wanted to read in bed? Seems like it would just weigh too much to hold comfortable. But I guess that's the trade off?
Anyways, any advice?
Go to an Apple Store and pick them up. Smaller will always be more convenient while larger will always be more powerful and productive. The sweet spot will differ from person to person.
If the sole reason is to read in bed/commute and you want the ease of access and portability, mini would be good. But if you want the best screen of course the pro would be the best option since they have a nice non-glare screen with ultra brightness and OLED. Me personally, I opted for the middle ground Air 11” when I was picking mine up back in May. Mainly use it for note taking/watching content, but being able to read pdfs without needing to zoom in so close is a nice benefit. I don’t feel like it’s too big personally, just the right amount where I don’t feel like I’m using a 30” monitor everyday, and neither the size of my iPhone. I’d also suggest going into the store to see what works best, but if you’re concerned that 11” might be too big, I’d say it’s the right balance for me where I don’t feel embarrassed using it on the train or wherever to read, and not needing to zoom in constantly.
Ended up getting the non-glare 11". Quite pricey and I'll never get close to the 1tb storage it comes with but its been amazing so far. Great size to hold and read comfortably but large enough to read CIMs and consume media. Its been great to read the news too in that size / format. Non-glare screen is top notch too. I never have to re-adjust to stop glare when I'm reading.
I recently picked up the M5 Airpad Pro 13” for note taking at MBA and have been using it as an all around device to supplement my PC.
I like it but can tell you that the size difference is noticeable compared to the 11. While I prefer and opted for the 13, if I was not using it to type or take notes etc, I’d go the 11
Now is the best time to get them due to the winter sales. Go to a local retailer and check what their clearances on past models are. I bought a 2024 iPad at full price and my partner just bought an unopened 2021 iPad (256GB) during clearance at a major well-known retailer for basically $150 - and apart from the button thing there is barely any difference in terms of functionality (unless you think of taking pictures with them). You can then buy accessories on Temu/Ali Express. It's like $2 for the magic pen and $10 for the magic keyboard and they both work better than my previous Apple set up. iPads are like TVs, just try to find a bargain - not worth to splash on it like a proper work laptop.
Get a kindle - reading on an iPad sucks. I have tried as a student and it’s just not as good of an experience. It’s too unwieldy. I think it depends on what you prioritize more, if you want to write and edit pdfs a lot get the 11 inch. If you want to read get the mini
You guys can't even pull the trigger on which iPad to buy?
