Why is Hairloss so Common in IB / Finance?

As the title reads, why is it so common? Is it mainly just stress that causes this or is it because a disproportionate amount men that are predisposed to hairloss and balding (mainly caucasian men) are in the industry? I personally would quit my job if it meant I would go bald.

All of the above and imo, most importantly, lack of sleep. This industry (but banking is the worst) is terrible for your sleep and a lot of fresh grads don't realize the havoc this job wrecks on your body. Worst shape of my life was when I was in banking

Just hit the gym and do cardio, eat strawberries you should not go bald even if overworked. I know plenty of inmates that still have hair

Lowkey I am glad that generations of you uncs have suffered this so us up and coming zoomers can prevent it. Op most guys go bald in every job, its mainly genetic, ib stress and poor choices just speed it up. I myself however, plan to hop on finasteride and do at least 15 minutes of intense cardio a day along with healthy diet (no one is "forcing" you to eat like shit). Finasteride has a 99 percent effectiveness rate, just a 1 percent chance your dick might not work right so you can hop off it if thats you. Losing my hair terrifies me, especially with my dad and grandad still having hair, I have thought a lot about how to optimize my ib lifestyle and leave as damage free as possible (hoping to be done early with "high finance" by 40 max if I can last that long) given how easy it is to get health info and insight into how stressful the job is now as compared to the current seniors who prob didn't graduate with a laptop.

Thanks, if you dont mind me asking, how many years have you worked in finance already and what level of seniority. Also outside of fin and exercise, any other measures youre taking? Vitamins, supplements, etc

Bro I’m 20 lol. Incoming SA, it’s just when I was recruiting I gave lifestyle a massive consideration since I like the gym and health a lot rn and would not be willing to sacrifice that completely. Who knows I may get fucked, but chemistry of finasteride should at least resolve the hair issue.

Hair loss for men is not unique to IB.  Just about every male will experience hair loss in every industry.  I have no statistics to back this up but I would say that 65% of hair loss is genetic, 20% can be attributed hair products and 15% might be related to life style.  If you do not have good genes, improving hair products and life style may not do much.  Look at a shampoo or conditioner or gel and read the labels and if you can't pronounce the words, the ingredients are probably bad for the scalp and hair.  Don't assume that because a product is legally sold that it can't do any damage. Also, if you smoke or drink heavily, I would reduce or eliminate it, especially the smoking.  I am convinced that smoking and drinking make you age faster.

Earlier this month I went on a 10 day hiking/camping trip and was in the sun a lot, walking about 20 miles every day. Diet was alright, maybe even slightly worse than regular. It was crazy to how much my beard grew in that time period relative to the same time period after I came back (and have since been largely inside the office/at home).
