WSO Super Bowl LVII Thread

Didn't see one here so will start one.

2023 NFL Super Bowl LVII:

Kansas City Chiefs (AFC, 14-3) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (NFC, 14-3)

When: Sun, Feburary 12th, 2023 | 4:30p MST (UTC-7)

Where: State Farm Stadium, Glendale, AZ

-

Opening Line: [O/U 49.5]

FPI: Philadelphia +50.1%, AVG of 0.1 pts

Use this post to talk predictions, standings, air grievances (me), or anything else. While I'm not a fan of either team, I think this one has the potential to actually be a really good game. I'm not a die-hard NFL fan like some in here are (CFB is better, IMO) but I always love following the playoffs and enjoy the festivities of watching 250+ grown men absolutely truck each other while I get to drink beer.

Personal Prediction: As much as I hate to see it, think Philly will take this one. As a die-hard NYG fan, I struggle to find a team that I despise as much as the Birds, but I think they're far too lean and deep to let this one slip out. It won't be a blowout by any means, but my prediction is that they'll edge up in the end. Will throw some money down for this one. I doubt Mahomes will be 100% prepped in time for kickoff, and their offense is just on another level. I've been watching some film breakdowns of their pass rush this past season, and they're just fuckin' good.

Would personally 'like' to see KC come out on top, but that's really just because a) I like Andy Reid, and b) did I mention I hate the Eagles? I just don't think it'll happen. Who knows.

F*** the Eagles. I can't stand them so much you're reading a UT guy rooting for the TTU quarterback to win. Or even if Buechelle has to be put in I would rather still see an SMU quarterback winning instead of Hurts. I hope they're on their game and Reid also says "F*** the Eagles" and pulls out all the stops to beat his old team. Now I'll just keep my head on a swivel  because Philly people are absolutely some of the dirtiest fans out there. The one person on the Eagles I will openly say I respect is Jason Kelce. But hey, guess who he's about to have to play? Oh that's right, his brother who is one of the best TEs.

Ultimately, I can see this game coming down to a win by a field goal like the AFC champsionship we just watched where that's what it took for KC to win. Whether it's another 23-20, as high as a 45-42 or as low as 9-6.

Update: And....Sills just got indicted for rape and kidnapping before the superbowl and isn't allowed to play, let alone  even dress. He was never a key player and I'm not projecting he actually did it, but with this timing it don't look good. Like someone was putting their thumb on the scale kind of timing and making someone collateral damage not looking good for both the NFL and the Eagles kind of timing. Especially since this isn't the first time a Superbowl team has run into this kind of "miraculous timing".

F*** the Eagles.

Amen. I was so sad with the niners' loss (my actual team), almost cried myself to sleep (not actually).

I was in Philly for work the day of the Super Bowl parade back in 2018, that was a $hitshow

Philly is right up there w/ Dallas as some of the teams that I cannot stand. I'm sure, like, 90% of Eagles fans are ordinary people, but those remaining 10% REALLY do the fanbase's reputation some serious damage. Watched PHL/NYG at a bar in DC, and was wearing my Tyrod jersey. Had two folks donning Davis & Brown jerseys come up right in my face and flip me off, yelling obscenities. Yeah, like... it's football. But god damn, get out of my face! Second less-than-ideal interaction I've had w/ Philly fans.

I like Kelce though. Hope he continues to do well in his career.

exact same thing happened to my buddy who came to visit who's a die-hard giants fan. Granted, later that night as a niners fan I was joking with a cowboys fan, so that didn't work out for me either.

Tbh I think the proportion of obnoxious eagles fans is way higher than 10%, I'd say closer to 35-40%. They're up there with cowboys fans, but tbh in my experience I just haven't seen cowboys people all that bad. That could just be an age thing, especially in the 90s

Philly fans are the only people that come close to European futbal teams ultras.  Either way, they both should be summarily executed, or atleast put into a zoo as their damn not human beings.

I don’t keep up with the nfl but know enough. I love Hurts’ story. Get pulled in natty in college for a backup nobody knows who becomes a legend. Has to transfer out and talking heads say he’ll join Bama’s coaching staff after he leaves Oklahoma because he doesn’t have a future and can’t throw a football.

Finally gets his break in the NFL and absolutely dominates. He seems to be a good guy off the field too.

Chiefs are great. Not a reach to call Mahomes the most gifted passer of all time. Dude is just built different. Very high chance he becomes the GOAT, although Brady will be tough to beat due to his championships and the fact he’s literally 47 or whatever and still winning.

The one thing I’ll never understand are NFL fans. I hate the word “classy”, but in college football, I’ve found the fans to be much more welcoming. Yeah drunk frat stars do stupid stuff, but the adults are all great. Hell, the Gamecock’s punter’s family got me into the stadium in Columbia when I was drunk and high out of my mind and couldn’t figure out the student gate. They said “this is my nephew from Georgia” and brought me to the family suites where I stuffed my face. Amazing people.

NFL from what I’ve seen has grown ass adults fighting over their teams. So dumb. Also saw where a kid I grew up with is now a WR on the patriots. Always thought “this dude is an insane athlete” and lo and behold he’s the next white wide receiver on the Pats. Never heard anything bad about him.

I probs won’t watch the Super Bowl.

Totally get it. I'll be the first to admit that back during undergrad, I was probably one of those rowdy-ass annoying college kids. Can certainly be tiring for others, any way you split it. College kids are DAMN annoying, speaking as a former douchebag boozehead. We've all been there. Well, most of us, anyway.

However, the vibes of a sunny CFB Saturday are unmatched, and untouched by any League game I've ever been to. The priorities seem to be flipped when comparing CFB vs NFL - for the former, you hope for two in-order things:

  1. You have fun! Yeah, football baby!
  2. Your team wins

When we lost games in college, it sucked. But I cannot remember a single time where I was 'sad' about it or a single time when a win vs loss would alter my immediate postgame plan of taking a killer nap, drinking an entire protein shake, and walking to the bar. As for NFL, I think that the only goal for so many people there is winning. Winning is great, but it should never come second to having fun. The tensions are so much higher, people are angrier, and folks are just looking for trouble in general. At the end of the day, athletes do what they do for their LOVE of the sport. Yes, you may desire to do well and earn bragging rights and everything, but all sports are entertainment. All sports are meant to take people's minds off their daily lives, not cause added stress and anger. NFL seems to bring out a lot more of those angry types.

Now, of course, most fans don't fit into this scenario. The majority of folks who love the NFL are perfectly pleasant, happy, and normal types. Just a lot more 'bad apples' it seems, especially from some... certain teams.

Have to agree about NCAA vs NFL fans. For instance, I rated and scaled each QB against their college teams up above. I'm going to have to push back a bit Stonks1990 on the difference between NCAA and NFL players. I'd say NCAA players are in it for the glory. NFL players are in it for the paycheck. That difference makes me tilt toward college ball, as much as I enjoy NFL games.

Also, back off my Cowboys lol! I honestly don't see what you're talking about with our fans outside of that some may be blindingly evangelical level devoted. But we don't throw snowballs at people with nine-volts in them or beer bottles to actually cause abuse *cough*f***ing Philly*cough*. I will agree that some of our players aren't exactly model citizens though, which sucks. Even if all teams have those, it's no excuse.

I'm a Patriots fan. I really should hate both these teams, but I only hate the Chiefs. Eagles have too many likeable players, fans are awesome (if you don't like the fans it's because you're soft + a Giants or Cowboys/Yankees/Lakers fan), Sirianni seems like an awesome coach, and their uniforms are sick. Hurts is one of the best stories in the NFL today.

On the other hand, you have Patrick Mahomes; who I like, but dislike by association with his god-awful wife and family. Andy Reid's son killed a young girl in a drunk driving accident. Travis Kelce is incredible but an insane try-hard off the field who will never be as impactful (or actually funny) as Gronk was (that is Patriots bias). I know many people from Kansas City / St. Louis area (lots of STL folk claim Chiefs since Rams left to LA) by virtue of where I've lived post graduation and can say that 95% of them don't know who Priest Holmes is. In fact I never heard a peep from them about the Chiefs before Patrick Maholmes arrived. Fuck the Chiefs.

I will be heavy on the Eagles as I was against the Giants (lol easiest bet oml) and the 49ers. Eagles are too stacked everywhere, and have every roster advantage aside from QB and TE. Hasson Reddick is going to take gimpy Maholmes head off, and I will be truly happy when he does.

Eagles 34, Chiefs 14
