Masters Recruitment for MBB

Greetings all, I'm looking for some insight on masters recruiting for US MBB. Some info about me:

  1. currently in my junior year of undergrad in the US (decent school)
  2. will be interning at a BB (IB, outside of US) this upcoming summer

After carefully thinking about my long-term career plan, I realized that I'd eventually like to return to the US. I know that lateral recruiting for FT IB positions is difficult, especially from outside of US -> US, so I'm looking into the possibility of FT MBB recruitment. I'd have to do a masters for this since I won't be able to recruiting this cycle (I have no consulting experience & no knowledge of case interviews atm).

My questions are:

  1. Do MBB recruit FT entry-level positions from master programs? (Assuming a top-ranked school since being at a target is important)
  2. I've read that it's doable and it's happened before, but is it common? Will my chances be vastly or only a little smaller than undergrads for FT recruitment?
  3. With no previous consulting experience, how long would it take for me to be prepared for interviews?
  4. How hard is it to pass MBB resume screens? Do they filter by school or past experiences? Do you need to have big-name consulting internships to pass?

Any comment is appreciated. Have a great day!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about MBB recruitment for master’s students in the US:

  1. Do MBB recruit FT entry-level positions from master’s programs?

    • Yes, MBB does recruit for full-time entry-level positions from master’s programs, especially from top-ranked schools. Being at a target school is crucial, as MBB heavily filters candidates based on the selectivity of their institution.
  2. Is it common, and how do chances compare to undergrads?

    • While it’s not as common as undergrad or MBA recruiting, it’s definitely doable. Your chances will depend on the prestige of your master’s program, your academic performance, and your ability to network effectively. If you’re at a top-ranked school, your chances may not be vastly smaller than undergrads, but you’ll need to stand out in other areas like networking and case prep.
  3. How long would it take to prepare for interviews with no prior consulting experience?

    • Preparation time varies, but most candidates spend several months preparing for MBB interviews. This includes mastering case interviews, behavioral questions, and networking. If you’re starting from scratch, dedicating 3-6 months to focused preparation is a reasonable timeline.
  4. How hard is it to pass MBB resume screens?

    • Passing the resume screen is challenging, as MBB filters heavily based on:
      • School: Attending a top-ranked or target school significantly increases your chances.
      • Academic Performance: A strong GPA (e.g., 3.7+ on a 4.0 scale) is often expected.
      • Work Experience: While big-name consulting internships help, they’re not mandatory. Highlighting relevant skills from your BB IB internship (e.g., problem-solving, teamwork, and analytical skills) can make your application competitive.
      • Extracurriculars: Leadership roles and impactful activities can also strengthen your resume.
  5. Do you need big-name consulting internships to pass?

    • No, but having a strong brand name on your resume (like your BB IB internship) can help. MBB values transferable skills, so focus on showcasing how your experience aligns with consulting (e.g., analytical rigor, client interaction, and teamwork).

Pro Tip: Networking is critical. Building relationships with consultants and alumni from your target master’s program can significantly improve your chances of getting an interview.

Good luck with your journey!
