I’m an operator (revenue and product leader in consumer/retail) and have tons of thoughts / examples of how I’m using in operating and would use at a portco. I’m working on a blog post and will try to come back and share it when done.

As for investing…. I would recommend that early use cases could easily be around market research. And also sourcing help on workflows and follow ups.

Some firms have dedicated data sci teams (bx, advent, eqt) and as above poster mentioned there’s a lot of use cases within portco management, for ex pricing strategy, customer segmentation, supply chain etc

On the investing piece it’s less common nowadays but you can quantify tailwinds / headwinds in a more robust way, or use it during DD to perhaps develop a differentiated outlook using SEO or geospatial analysis. It isn’t like quant in the public markets which uses signals or HFT trading but having a differentiated outlook / analytical edge allows a firm to have much more confidence in the investment in the bidding process and therefore more likely to win a deal.
