Am I Underpaid?
Based on compensation threads I've seen here along with the standard benchmarking report for investing professionals, I have a sense that my shop is underindexed vs. comparable firms but wanted to confirm.
- Latest fund: $5-10B (happy to provide more specificity if it swings the needle much in this range)
- First-year Associate Compensation: $130K + 100% Bonus
- SA Compensation: $175K + 100% Bonus
- Lack of clarity on VP and onwards
Probably a bit. Any coinvest? Geography?

the people saying underpaid are probably right and work at large institutional funds , where is the $ you aren't getting going? this isn't rocket science if the managing partners are re-investing it into the firm, hiring more people, expanding footprint, shut up it will pay off for you in the end.
Thanks, it's a good point. To your broader point, I would never plan on leaving because of $20-40K in compensation because I have a longer-term view but it's helpful to know, especially if exploring the recruiting landscape.
And while I agree with you that the money might be going somewhere well-intentioned, it's also always a possibility that partners are just keeping for themselves rather than reinvesting.
if culture is good with the managing partners ask what is the 5 year plan. for example i have 150 bps in a 3 bn fund, we are looking to enter into a strategic with huge institutions, my carry will decrease 50 bps at min, maybe more but i know our AUM will triple over night ... needless to say I am excited
In the end? He’s an associate who is underpaid compared to peers in similarly sized funds.
