Asian MF Reputations
Hi everyone,
I am currently a first year analyst at a BB (think MS, etc.) in HK interested in Pan-Asia funds. Does anyone have up to date information (experience, bschool placement, comp) on good funds like Baring, MBK and PAG?
Thanks in advance!
They're all top-tier funds and should give you top-tier everything... but why does that matter now? Should you at least try to get one foot in the door first?
Have already had their HH reach out - trying to learn more. Namely Baring - they just raised large fund so returns can't be too bad, right?
They went through a restructuring last year mate, PM me if you wanna chat
also wondering what's the reputation of americvan MFs in greater china? blackstone? wp? kkr? bain cap? carlyle? heard that they do not perform as well as the asians MFs listed above.
I read Asian MF as asian mother fucker at first lmao.
In that case, I guess Asian MFs would include Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Jack Ma
Bumping this for more serious comments...
Ok - what do you want to know? I don't work at one of those funds, but at a global competitor so I might know something that's of use to you. Ask more specific questions please.
Ru Chinese
I hear Carlyle's Seoul office is a great time
heard there are a lot of chickies there
What are chickies
Especially after maybe two months in and you start to learn a little bit of the buyside business
Of China based funds Hillhouse is probably the smartest.
Among MFs Warburg has the biggest Asia presence, TPG too. Blackstones group is more nascent so not as prestigious in Asia as the western world
Curious to learn about Hillhouse's structure - how are they organized? By industry or by public/PE side? Can you work on both? Within PE itself obviously they do more VC/growth investments, but what about the buyout practice, or are buyouts more opportunistic in nature (e.g. GLP) given the nature of the Asian markets? Many thanks for any insight
My team recently spoke with a partner there. At the senior level, it sounds like the staff invests across all the funds. The partner we spoke with looked at buyouts, GE, and public companies. Not sure if its the same for junior staff. Hope that helps
PAG's RE practice hugely respected in the industry. Worked at a NYC EB covering REPE globally and PAGRE's principles are a big deal even on this side.
In APAC, what are the other REPE that can stack up against PAG?
Blackstone has the largest "pure" Asian "REPE" fund at ~$7bn.

And have done some sizeable deals - Tysan, Croesus, Australian logistics, considered taking SOHO China private.
