Based on the most helpful WSO content, Berkshire Partners is considered a top-tier private equity fund with strong performance and a great reputation. Here are some key insights:

  1. Culture and Performance:

    • Berkshire Partners is known for its top-quartile returns and virtually no senior turnover, which speaks to its stability and strong internal culture.
    • The firm is highly regarded for its professional growth opportunities, including sponsorship for 1-2 associates per year to return after business school (e.g., HBS or GSB).
  2. Interview Process:

    • They typically look for sharp former consultants with a strong consultant toolkit.
    • Candidates should be prepared to think like an investor, using frameworks like Porter's 5 Forces and conducting diligence on potential investments.
    • On the finance side, expect tasks like a paper DCF and top-level market size projections in Excel, rather than a full 3-statement LBO model.
  3. Industry Groups:

    • While specific details on individual industry groups are not provided, the firm’s overall reputation suggests a high level of professionalism and intellectual rigor across teams.
  4. Associate Reviews:

    • Associates benefit from excellent exit opportunities, including guaranteed admission to top business schools and strong career progression within the firm.

If you're considering Berkshire Partners, it’s a fantastic place to be for professional growth, stability, and long-term career prospects.

I’ve heard Berkshire’s industry teams have different reputations / performance. Any truth to that or is experience more standardized?

I think that's true although I think the Associate experience is generally pretty standardized. Of their four sectors of focus (Business & Consumer Services, Healthcare, Industrials and Tech & Comms) I think anecdotally their Industrials and Healthcare teams are quite strong. Basing this off of their SRS deal with Leonard Green and their investment in IVC which seem to be both strong performers.
