Best PE Firms in NJ?
As the title states - what are the best PE firms in NJ? Any vertical, would like to get an overall lay of the land. Currently at a top EB, top ranked and considering my options. Born and raised in NJ and thinking I want out of the city now and back into the ‘burbs. Appreciate the insight!
Honestly the only name that comes to mind is on the later stage VC / growth equity side: Edison Partners. I've definitely come across some other small shops but the names escape me. There's also some private credit/co-invest/LP type work like Prudential, the Blackrock alts group and the Princeton endowment, but I suspect that's probably not interesting to you. This is a good question though, surely there has to be a few other groups out there. I'm sure you already know this being from NJ, but the taxes are brutal: highest property tax in the country, the "millionaire tax" which is probably most relevant on this forum, etc.
OP here - thanks for the response, very helpful. I’m also aware of ECP in Summit, NJ. Didn’t know of the millionaire tax, guess I’m too early in my career for that to hit my radar but think it’s interesting to know. I thought taxes were comparable to living in NYC.
Good call on ECP, I can't believe I forgot them. Was even in their office years ago.
Relatively slim pickings. ECP is a good one. Princeton Equity Group (in Princeton, duh) may be interesting too. Relatively new firm but apparently the founders are legit and well known among consumer / franchise / multi-unit investors. If you’re from south Jersey there’s a handful of solid funds in Philly that could also be of interest (LLR, Guardian, etc.)
Since you said any vertical... Blackrock PEP is headquartered in Princeton (primarily co-invest work). Could be a nice WLB change + decent money for non NYC living
PEP is definitely not a cushy LP seat. People who have worked there told me they work PE-lite hours but don't even get PE-lite comp because they're limited by BlackRock pay bands.
Honestly, I would stick to NY firms and just find one that allows more flexibility to work from home (increasingly rare nowadays). You're just not going to find the same caliber of firms (if any, per the responses so far) that would justify a move to Jersey.
