Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some effective ways to find LMM (Lower Middle Market) opportunities, especially in NYC:

  1. Direct Outreach to Firms: Many LMM PE firms don’t rely on headhunters and instead recruit directly. Research firms in your target area and reach out to them directly. Cold emailing can be highly effective, especially if you tailor your message to highlight your relevant experience.

  2. Leverage Alumni Networks: Use LinkedIn to identify alumni from your school who work at LMM firms. Reach out to them for informational interviews or advice. This can often lead to referrals or insights into unadvertised roles.

  3. LinkedIn Research: Look up associate alumni of LMM firms to see where they went after their stints. This can give you an idea of the firm's reputation and potential exit opportunities.

  4. Local Organizations and Membership Directories: Membership directories of local professional organizations, such as NAIOP or ULI chapters, can be a goldmine for finding smaller, lesser-known firms. These directories often list legitimate companies in the space.

  5. Networking Events: Attend industry events, conferences, or meetups in NYC. These are great opportunities to meet professionals from LMM firms and build connections.

  6. Job Boards and Forums: While recruiters may not cover LMM roles extensively, platforms like WSO, niche job boards, and even firm websites can list opportunities. Keep an eye on these regularly.

  7. Focus on Regional Banks and Boutiques: Many LMM firms work closely with regional investment banks or boutiques. Building relationships with professionals at these banks can help you tap into their network of LMM clients.

  8. Persistence with Recruiters: While recruiters may not prioritize LMM roles, it’s worth staying in touch with them. Some may have insights or connections that aren’t immediately apparent.

By combining these strategies, you can maximize your chances of uncovering LMM opportunities in NYC.

Honestly man, I am a big believer in finding the opportunities for yourself. What industry are you interested in? What alumni networks are you part of? I would literally go on linkedin and look at formers of your bank and find their emails and ping for networking. It is a bit of a slog but PE is extremely competitive, especially in NYC
