Big 3 Tech PE vs MF Tech Group

Hey, I was just curious about the main differences between going to one of the Big 3 (SL, TB, Vista) versus being in the tech team at a megafund (BX, KKR, TPG, Carlyle, Advent, WP, CD&R, etc.). Is the work any different? Is comp different? How does deal flow compare? Are the companies you work with different? Also, if someone is really serious and interested in doing tech PE would it ever make sense to go to a MF tech team instead of one of the Big 3? Would really appreciate any insights people have about the differences between the two. Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it seems like you're trying to compare the Big 3 Tech PE firms with the tech teams at megafunds. While I don't have specific details on the differences in work, compensation, deal flow, or the companies you'd work with, I can tell you that both paths offer unique opportunities.

The Big 3 Tech PE firms (Silver Lake, Thoma Bravo, and Vista Equity Partners) are highly specialized in technology and have a strong reputation in the industry. They might offer a more focused experience in tech PE.

On the other hand, being part of the tech team at a megafund like Blackstone, KKR, TPG, Carlyle, Advent, Warburg Pincus, or Clayton, Dubilier & Rice could provide a broader experience, given these firms' diverse portfolios. For instance, KKR runs Tech out of Menlo, but they also have a NYC office.

If you're serious about tech PE, both paths could be valuable. It might come down to your personal preference for a specialized vs. a broader experience, the culture of the firm, location, and other factors.

Remember, this is just a high-level overview. I'd recommend reaching out to professionals in these firms or similar threads on WSO to get more detailed insights.
