The purpose isn't necessarily to get the right answer, but to see how candidates think. So, while acing the brainteaser might not be a game-changer if you've done well on the technical aspects, it could potentially give you an edge if you're borderline.

I have been in many many PE interviews and would say that it is not common, in my experience.
