Breaking into Healthcare Private equity
I'm an MD with two years of prior healthcare consulting experience at McKinsey. I never did any private equity work at McK, but I'm interested in now leaving medicine and going into healthcare PE. Is there a path for me to break in directly without doing more consulting or banking?
Have you finished a residency or at least an internship? Easiest path IMO is going to a top MBA program or join a PE backed practice and rise on the admin side. Know quite a few doctors who did that. Now they are either PE Operating Partners (with carry) or in some cases, investors themselves.
Haven't done residency but plan on doing at least one year before leaving. How much do ops roles pay? I have done a lot of provider ops work before. Ideally though, I want to be on the investor side because I've enjoyed strategy and modeling work much more than ops work. Is there a path without doing the MBA? I'd have a good shot at HWS, but really don't want to pay more tuition money and spend more time in school
EDIT: Misread, you're at McK. PE Ops is very feasible. Investing might be tough, try for life science VC funds? Start networking.
I had to read this 3x to realize MD meant doctor and not managing director lol. Roughly what year are you at McK? Analyst? Why not recruit for PE right now? There's a strong history of the MBB --> PE associate path. An MBA will actually lower your chances (not raise) as pre-MBA PE experience is preferred for those recruiting post-MBA.
I'm no longer at McK but I did two years as a BA previously.
Ah I see. So you're actively practicing as a physician now? Then unfortunately tougher transition to investment team, though may have a unique opportunity with healthcare-heavy funds like Patient Square or public biotech investors like Farallon, etc.
