Funds Similar to L Catterton

Been reading up on funds for associate recruiting and have taken an interest in L Catterton. I want to move into a Buyout/Growth fund focused on traditional Consumer / Consumer-Internet, but it seems as though the vast majority are on the west coast. Any names I could look into that operate similarly to Catterton in NYC?

There aren't many consumer-only or consumer-primary funds in New York.

  • Sycamore is by far and away the biggest (Fund III was just under $5b, total AUM has to be near $15b)
  • You could technically say TSG Consumer counts (they have one partner running a small office in New York with a couple juniors, but are effectively headquartered in San Francisco)
  • Irving Place does consumer as one of only three verticals
  • Centerview Capital runs a heavily operationally-focused fund for middle market consumer

The only other thing that comes to mind is Carlyle (whose industry-specific silos recruit separately, or at least used to). I have a friend in 'U.S. Buyout - Corporate Private Equity - Consumer & Retail' ... just pasted that from his vcf, what a mouthful.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

The above is probably your best bet, but if you want to stretch a little bit more:

KarpReilly is in Greenwich, like L Catterton. Much smaller fund though ($200M), but I'd imagine they operate similarly to L Catterton's growth fund. CAVU Ventures has a NY office, but also similar $200M, growthy/venture-type investments.

You could also check out Tengram Capital Partners, which is in Westport CT (~10 min of a further drive up from Greenwich). Swander Pace has a Bedminster, NJ office about an hour drive out of the city as well (but main office is in SF).
