GMAT on Resume as an analyst?

I took GMAT during my senior year in college and got 750+ score. Would it be helpful to include the score on my resume for PE on cycle / off cycle or would it be shown as a sign to leave the firm for MBA down the line?

Including a 750+ GMAT score on your resume as an analyst can be a strategic move, especially in the context of private equity recruiting. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Signaling Intellectual Ability: A high GMAT score (750+) is often viewed as a strong indicator of intellectual horsepower, particularly if your GPA or academic background is not stellar. It can help offset a weaker GPA or non-target school background, making your profile more competitive.

  2. PE Recruiting Context: For on-cycle and off-cycle PE recruiting, headhunters and firms often evaluate candidates based on a combination of factors, including academic credentials, deal experience, and technical skills. A 750+ GMAT score can enhance your profile, especially for UMM/MF firms where competition is fierce, and candidates with near-perfect profiles dominate.

  3. MBA Implications: While including your GMAT score might hint at future MBA aspirations, it’s not necessarily a red flag. Many PE firms expect analysts to pursue an MBA eventually, and a strong GMAT score can demonstrate that you’re prepared for that path. However, if you’re concerned about signaling an early departure, you could strategically include the score only when applying to firms where it adds significant value.

  4. When to Include It:

    • If your GPA is below 3.7 or from a semi-target/non-target school, including the GMAT score can strengthen your resume.
    • If your GPA is strong and you’re from a target school, the GMAT score might be less critical but still a nice addition.
    • For LMM/MM firms, the GMAT score might be less relevant compared to your deal experience and fit.

In summary, a 750+ GMAT score is a valuable asset and can bolster your resume for PE recruiting. Just be mindful of the context and tailor your resume to the specific firm and role you’re targeting.
