So I interviewed with an UMM PE firm and a headhunter said that they the firm would love to extend me an offer after reference checks, so I decided to stop interviewing. I checked in with them last Thursday and Today. The HH keeps saying they will "have an update soon." They also have not reached out to my references. Was I lied to?

No, but something could've happened on the PE side. Personally, I would have kept interviewing until I got the official call from the team and/or a written offer.
