How important is an MD recommendation to land a PE gig?

I'm afraid that the MDs in my group are not supportive enough to help me. Just wanted to get a sense of how the process works and if UMM PE firms actually call up MDs for recs.

Thanks!

A solid MD recommendation (especially if they have a relationship with the firm) can go a long way.

The process obviously differs depending on which firm you are recruiting at (sorry for the “It depends” answer, but it applies here). I’ve had friends actually receive offers prior to any references given. He / she was given the offer and then went through the reference process simply on a confirmatory basis.

I would stress on the factors you can control. Study up and prepare for the interview as well as you can, but don’t let it impede on your work at your current firm.
