Incremental 1099 Bonuses

Monkeys,

Curious if anyone's firm has paid a portion of year end bonus in the form of a 1099, in addition to receiving a W2 bonus. Similar to others, I was shocked at my bonus figure this year after closing 3 deals and having a successful exit. After year end reviews, the partners issued an incremental 1099 bonus for the same amount as my W2 bonus (likely tied to the exit) which felt odd. Is the normal practice or a red flag?
