Joining PE owner of PortCo I am working at

Hey guys - I am currently working the corporate development team of a PE-owned PortCo. The PE shop which owns us is super cool, and I think at some point down the track (perhaps when the PE shop exits) I'd like to work for the PE shop. My resume stacks up ok (was previously in IB however not a walk-in to a shop like this) and wondering what the best way to go about this is. I have a pretty good relationship with the guys at the PE shop, but how is best to first express that interest, etc. My current role is heavy on financial modelling, helping prepare materials for IC etc., so I work pretty closely with the PE guys and think I've made a good impression so far

Hey there! It sounds like you're in a great position to make a move. You've got a solid background in IB, you're already working closely with the PE shop, and you've been making a good impression. That's a fantastic start!

Here's how I'd approach this:

  1. Continue to excel in your current role: Keep up the good work and continue to impress the PE guys. Show them that you're a valuable asset and that you can handle the responsibilities of a PE role.

  2. Build relationships: You mentioned that you have a pretty good relationship with the guys at the PE shop. That's great! Keep building on those relationships. Networking is key in this industry.

  3. Express your interest: Once you've built a solid relationship, it's time to express your interest. You could bring it up casually in a conversation, or you could request a formal meeting to discuss your career goals. Be honest about your aspirations, but also be respectful of their time and their process.

  4. Prepare for the transition: If they're open to the idea, start preparing for the transition. Brush up on your PE knowledge, prepare for potential interviews, and be ready to demonstrate why you'd be a great fit for their team.

Remember, every PE shop is different, so it's important to tailor your approach to the specific culture and expectations of the shop you're interested in. Good luck!
