Media/Entertainment PE Practices

Does anyone know of PE shops that are either focused on Media or Entertainment, or have strong presences? Funds of any size, just wanted to know who the players are so I can start targeting research. I'm sure others have this same question.

The ones I have thus far (feel free to let me know if one of these shouldn’t be here)-

Sole Focus: -Elevation -Zelnick Media -Clarity -VSS -Quadrangle

Strong Presence: -Providence Equity Partners -Apax

Thanks!

alta and boston ventures are some smaller ones. i think both are in/around boston.

i don't know if i would call elevation sole focus on media/entertainment. they had a huge investment in Palm, which was tech/consumer (and a sh*tty investment). maybe that POS was enough to get them out of tech.

It wasn't that bad. I believe they took a little money off the table when the Pre was getting hot press and the price at which HPQ came in at was enough to make them whole.

Also, they continue to have significant exposure to tech due to second-market purchase of facebook (200mmish of equity in) . Given today's activity I would guess that on paper that money is at 2x at least?

they were looking pretty bad when palm was having trouble finding a buyer (and accordingly, potentially a donut investment), i will concur

Allen & Co. They are supposedly very powerful in Hollywood.

-----sorry, realized that Allen is an IB. Would be a good starting point, 2 years Allen & co>>>>>>PE.

Most mega funds, Blackstone, KKR, Cerebus, MDP actively look for investments in Media and Telecom. So they are all safe (BUT HARD TO COME BY) options.

Other Good Media Focused Funds

Providence - All around Media and Telecom - Solid Quadrangle - Media, some telecom - Middle of the road. Decent shop. Ripplewood - General - Very good fund, hard to come by info on it Hellman & Friedman - General - Prestige factor is high, solid deals, tough recruiting Columbia Capital - Earlier Stage General - Associate level jobs are hard to come by. They do very innovative things M/C Ventures - Telecom and Media Focused - Associate level jobs are hard to come by. Own Legendary Pictures. Do interesting things. Kelso & Co - General - Solid Oak Hill - General M&T - Hires good amount of people. Solid place to work TA Associates - Very active in Telecom - "Call Center" reputation Veronis Suhler - Media Focused - World Class reputation in sector. Welsh Carson - Telecom - Own wireless towers, and diversified Media assets
