Merchant Banking Advice

Hello,

As a student, I am looking to get some better information on merchant banking firms and divisions. I would appreciate any information on firm names, how they rank next to each other, and general advice to somebody considering merchant banking as opposed to investment banking. It doesn't seem to be as popular as investment banking, so I haven't been able to learn as much as I would like to.

Thanks Again!

The most established firms are probably BDT (Chicago, 9B fund) and Raine (Media focused). GS and MS both have merchant banking divisions although I believe MS is mostly real-estate focused. There are also some other smaller/newer ones (like Incentrum)

Rothschild Merchant Banking is the investment arm of Rothschild. I know someone who works in the US private equity arm (I also interviewed with them) so this is all anecdotal. RMB is split into a bunch of different investment strategies in Europe and North America. Five Arrows Capital is the US private equity team and they do healthcare and tech. They are really strong in healthcare and healthcare IT specifically. Apparently the private equity is completely separate from the investment bank. They don’t even have the same office.
