I am thinking of joining a fund whose latest fund size is $5bn as an associate. What exit opportunities will be closed to me than an associate at a MF would have?

It will be more difficult to recruit for top SM HFs (although not sure you want to nowadays... lol) and activist investors like Elliott as they really like their MF pipelines. HSW for b-school will be tougher. It will be more difficult to move upstream to UMM/MF (e.g. it's much simpler to go from TPG -> New Mountain Capital than from a generic MM PE fund).
