On-Cycle to start in May before Graduation

College Senior here looking to plan for on cycle.

My graduation ceremony is late May. Is there any chance on cycle could start before then? Was planning on doing a grad trip w some friends, assuming I should cancel that in case it starts early? Any advice would be helpful, if anyone at PE firms have any color on whether there is a cut off date (e.g. June 1) from when on cycle can’t start before, would be helpful for me to plan.

Am aware that very few firms even have spots (~80 kids got offers last year according to some HHs I’ve been speaking with) and more and more firms are recruiting off-cycle. However want to plan to crush on cycle so I don’t have to continuously recruit for months on end while doing the banking stint.

thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, on-cycle recruiting is notoriously unpredictable and can start at any time, often with little to no warning. There’s no hard cutoff date like June 1, and historically, processes have launched as early as late spring or even earlier. For example, some threads highlight how on-cycle can kick off unexpectedly, even late at night or during busy periods like deal closings.

Given this unpredictability, it’s wise to prioritize preparation over leisure plans. If your goal is to crush on-cycle and avoid prolonged recruiting, you should be ready to pivot quickly. Headhunters often advise candidates to prepare as if the process could start "tomorrow," ensuring you’re not caught off guard.

If you’re set on a grad trip, consider keeping it flexible or ensuring you have access to your materials and can respond to headhunter outreach promptly. The opportunity cost of missing on-cycle could outweigh the short-term enjoyment of a trip.

For the love of god, please do not cancel your graduation trip for on cycle recruiting. You will have the rest of your life to be miserable (assuming you go the IB / PE route), why would you give up a once in a lifetime trip with your boys just to have a 1% chance of getting an offer. FYI - most firms didn't even fill their associate class during on-cycle and will be launching processes again at the beginning of 2025.

Agree with the above, do not cancel your trip. Was likely the greatest, rowdiest, happiest week of my life.

A lot of great firms didn't do on-cycle or ended up taking zero people from the process. There are still seats open for 2025, some firms are going back out for more next year. Hopefully this clown show ends and we get back to normal, sane timelines.

Thanks appreciate the comments here - definitely trying to avoid canceling the trip. Just wondering if anyone knew if there’s any chance on cycle could start before June 1??? Have graduation May 28th and 29th…
