Path to PortCo C-Suite

For those who are in exec roles at portco’s, what was your path like?

Is coming from PE the best route, and if so, at what level do people typically transition to a portco? What positions do PE associates move into?

Would appreciate any insight

Varies by position and by Portco, but typically I've seen it as follows

  • C-Suite - Generally individuals who have been in leadership roles at F500 companies in the industry, typically have anywhere from 20-30 years experience
  • Corporate Development (VP level, N-1) - I've seen these rolls filled by both former bankers and PE deal teams - typically were VPs when they left IB / PE. For most of the people who came from IB, they specifically worked with the PE firm before on one or multiple deals
  • Transformation / Strategy (VP level, N-1 or 2) - Typically come from consulting backgrounds - I've seen everything from MBB, to smaller shops like West Monroe and other
  • BU Presidents (SVP or VP level, N-1) - Similar to C-Suite, have deep experience in relevant markets. if the platform is executing a roll-up strategy, if they buy a larger platform as its own BU, CEO of acquired company becomes the president of the full BU

In my limited experience, I haven't seen somebody at the associate or senior associate level join a portco, though I'm sure it's possible

Hope this helps

There aren’t a lot of people who want to go from investment team in PE to portco mgmt but if you do want to do that I think you have pretty good ability to leapfrog the other people who want the portco c suite jobs. Like i would rather have a 32 year old guy who did a standard banking to PE path as my CFO of a $1B TEV portco than the normal talent pool for that role
