PE MF can have a dozen or more staffers working on the portfolio team. They range from former MBB consultants doing ad hoc strategy/analytics work to former C-Suite exes advising portco CEOs and boards.

PE MM will typically have very small portfolio teams — maybe an operating partner or two. LMM firms don’t usually have a dedicated portfolio team but the deal teams will get their hands dirty in portfolio operations.

In general I think portfolio ops is a good place to be. Lots of growth opportunity. PE will need to rely more on good old operational improvements to increase multiples in higher interest rate environment. Good pay, but different structure than deal teams.
