Private equity in developing markets
Which PE firms are most active in developing markets? Do they have set funds dedicated to this side of the business, or are they just integrated with the overall business? Are there some well-known funds dedicated solely to developing markets?
There's a bunch. Check out EMPEA (EM PE professional organization)
Off the top of my head, funds that are focused solely on emerging markets: Abraaj (Struggling right now) Helios 1K1V Emerging Capital Partners Capital Group
Also - A lot of the larger funds have emerging markets focused funds.
Do you know any of the larger ones off the top of your head that would be good exemplars of larger funds with EM focused funds?
Are these small, subsidiary EM focused funds usually constrained to a vertical / geography (e.g. EM agribiz, or rather, Lat AM only) etc.?
Sure - Carlyle has buyout funds dedicated to Sub-Saharan Africa, Peru, South America, MENA, and Asia. KKR has Asian buyout and growth funds, but recently disbanded their Africa team. BX has an Asian fund. Advent International has operations across LatAm as well as China and India. Just a few.
My understanding is that within most of the larger funds, the EM focused funds are geographically focused as opposed to industry. Although I'm sure that they lean towards certain industries more than others depending on location.

For those interested in investing in developing countries, what are the best options to consider? How would the day to day of the job differ (eg emerging market PE vs investing in emerging market public companies)?
