Summer Intern Opinion

Have a query about one of our summer interns and would be curious about what you folks think. It’s been a few weeks since they started and they’re consistently arriving well after 10:00 every single day - to the point where they’re even usually the last to arrive, even after the seniors! Tends to leave rather early too.

I think the seniors are starting to realise this but not commented on it yet. Overall the intern’s work is fine but not stellar enough to justify it. Do you think I should mention it to them as an aside at our next catch up, or let it play out?

Personal opinion is that as an intern you should really, at the very least, show you’re keen. Not advocating for facetime at all costs but at least be among the early ones to arrive and later ones to leave. There’s always models and memos to review and improve on. Thoughts?

I would absolutely mention it, and tell them they should be there around 9am (or whatever time you/most people get in) and check in with folks before they leave.

I wouldn't even view this as a facetime issue, it's normal work hours. Facetime would be keeping them there past midnight just because others are there. Showing up at a reasonable hour is a normal ask - some interns just need very explicit directions. Other reason may be that this intern has decided IB is not for them and doesn't really care about a return offer.
